well, i think most people on here are to some degree. making money is the only way we can buy new gear, and then come on the forum and talk about how much we lust over it (gearslutz?)

business has dropped a little since the economy started dfegad, but it's still good here

I've been making money from my studio pretty much since the very beginning. I just wanted to get some gear to make demos, but as soon as a couple of other artists in my area heard it they asked if I would help them if they paid me. Things have since snowballed slowly, but surely to a point where I'm now making a large part of my total income from producing (the rest comes from touring with my band and doing the odd live sound gig). Bands are seeking me out specifically to help them these days and I have enough cred to go up to a band and tell them that I'd like to produce them and then quite often get to work with them.

I've also found that doing a couple of charity jobs a year is a good thing because I definitely get more work in that way. And some good publicity a lot of the times.

Wink

Gotta make a few bucks doing this thing....
I have a simple rig, done a few records, lots of demos....but mostly because I play drums, bass and lead and rhythm. I do singer songwriters that need everything else on the track, so if I do a track for $200.....one take on all my parts and a vocal comp, I'm comin' out ahead. Bands? $20 AT LEAST an hour no matter who you are as an engineer, there's always a turd in the band who will take FOREVER to finish their part!.... It makes life so much easier doing all the tracks when yer schooled on a few instruments!

It depends on how you look at it. The past few years I have made a lot of money consistently. However, I'm pretty sure at least 97% of that money has been converted into new gear. But, I'm getting close to my "dream gear" from 4 years ago so my buying is slowing down. But only slightly.

Hopefully business will continue to grow...

I make consistent money but most of it goes into gear. But I also work a early day job on off times making mucho money that I save to live off of when time's busy. Smart financing is a must in the business!

Our charges average out to about $50/75 per hour. We do not do "bands" per se. Single/trio at the most..no live drums..micing cabs at very low volume..all headphone. .
We specialize in arranging..& sweetin' the tune, they bring to us. You really can down size ,make a profit, by not purchasing new gear you think you need --We budget for a new piece of gear ~ once every 8 years.

No late hours--or loud guitars to keep from bleeding --drums to mic. All drums are performed on a Trap Kat & the Kurzweil keys. No PC/Mac software running. Just a Roland VS 2480 and 30 years of pushing buttons. Most of our clients are 40-65 in age.

. I have seen some pretty amazing gear and rooms~ for less than 1/2 what we demand. We actually sold most of our "higher-end" gear. Our clients don't really keep up on gear^^ they just want a tune recorded. Behringer=Neve..they never really ask. No need to rack a 960L when a Lxp5 will do....

no my setup is a bottomless void that sucks up the money i make elsewhere.
attempts to make money with it usually end up in obscene amounts of drama, misery & gnashing of teeth.
so i go back to my day job & play in my free time.

I have an extremely modest set up and make roughly 300 a week. Sometimes a little less, sometimes a shit ton more.

My place is just a bedroom (well a live room and control is bedroom) but I find I get better sounds out of it everyday. Once I'm able to multitrack and upgraded my mics I'm gonna try and rival a much better studio sound. If I can, I'll put ads up. I'm only 16 so if it's good enough I'll charge about £10 an hour where most bigger local studios do £25. Thing is, no matter how good a sound comes from it, as long as the control room is my bedroom, no matter how good, it's still a bedroom, and regardless of the sound, people still don't want to record in a bedroom.

It's crazy that most of you guys say that you spend what you earn on gear. I'm actually selling the gear I don't use and keep the money instead! The only new gear I just bought is my Korg MicroX, but I sold my microkorg and Edirol UA-25 to buy it, so I didn't lose much money in the process.

I record my bands on my own dime. I have recorded other bands but it is not fun for me unless I'm in the band.

Over the years I have gone back and forth doing this thing full time. It has always been feast or famine, and I get too nervous in the low times so I get a job...

Right now I have a 9-5 job, so I am being picky about what I work on in my limited time. I make around $200-1000 a month recording, and recently all of that has gone to gear. I'm sure that makes me look like a sucker, but I just really love recording. Also my bands get great recordings for free!

We try to buy very old technology gear --saves lots of money. You can purchase $5k equipment == for $500 i.e. VS 2480

i think most of the people who are spending what they earn have a day job and do recording on the side.

didn't you know???? in Nashville its ALL about WHO you KNOW and blow it has absolutely NOTHING to do with gear OR talent!! yes I am bitter about nashville I have never witnessed such a screwed up music scene in my LIFE!! I watched the "nashville pro's " take my ex land lord for a ride to the tune of $25K to do his CD !! I could write an entire book all about how screwed up the nashville music scene is... the areas of the country (usa) where I come from its all about talent can you play good??? can you run a 50,000 watt flying rig.. God knows I HATE nashville and discourage people to avoid it if at all possible

P.S. sorry for the rant I just loath the nashville music biz

Apparently Nashville is a bit messed up nowadays. I've heard that from a lot of people lately, and from Artists/producers who went there to try to make a dime.

The scene in Toronto Canada is pretty dead as far as getting out there is concerned. It's almost impossible to even get noticed unless you play some hard rock music.

I am a solo artist and it's impossible to showcase my music. Im past the acoustic guitar gig and whatnot, I could care less about that, but performing with a turntable is not really accepted here, Unless you're a Dj... How am I gonna play those 25 synths I recorded? Ha!

I work on way more international projects than anything, because the people here aren't serious, and they think they can get songs produced for free... Well you get what you pay for.

awesome, why not ask someone who actually is here? have you lived here before? or are you just going by hearsay?

i think the thing that throws people off about the music scene down here is that it is not the place to be if you're starting out. if you are, you wont last 6 months, seriously. most of the people in music here are making their living doing it (although i have seen some studios closing lately b/c of the economy, of course).

finding professionals in nashville is just like anywhere else. you have to find an engineer that you could get along with...and not just someone who will run pro tools for you. i produce all of the bands that come through here, just because i want them to have an ideal CD to go shopping with. there are people that charge 2 or 3 times more than me for the experience. and that's ok, they've earned it, but where the heck did your landlord go to pay 25k?
