Hi All And Can I Add Something?

Hello All. New to Forum.

This thread is so good that I finally had to register, (feeling guilty), and add a couple thoughts.
I hope the following post isn't too long.

The following is just something funny to ponder;
I wonder why some sampling tech is so well accepted and others not.
Not just drums.
It's used in movie scores and tv all the time to replace whole orchestras.
If it was possible to change the timbre of someones voice though, how would that be received?
Is timbre the right word?
I don't mean autotune.
We've all seen how that's been perceived in the news recently.

I mean sing into the mic and come out sounding like someone else - Frank Sinatra, LOL.
Maybe that is possible? I don't know.
It is something to ponder.
Sadly.... I wouldn't mind something like that for myself sometimes.
Anyway...
A poor performance made good with sound used from someone else.
Isn't that what's happening with drum samples?
I hope I'm not straying here?

For the record; I use all the methods mentioned in this thread....except a programed performance.

One last comment regarding the use of samples on cymbals;
Like others here said...
They just never sound right when it's something like a repeating hit - like a ride cymbal.Too complex.
If that's all you got - pour reverb or delay all over them. LOL.
A better idea - like what someone else here stated - to use a hybrid.

Just a few random thoughts as this is a very interesting topic for me at this time.

For this thread - I'd use drumagog or other and tell them why - or track it again.

Good luck.

That's it - hello all again.
Cheers.
Jim.

Think about it. How many drum tracks sound like the actual drum that was
recorded? None. EVERYthing is EQ'd and compressed. Is that a dis-service to
drummers? I think not. None of us are purists. I think we can lighten up a bit.

I had a session where an assistant screwed up and the kick mic fell out of the
holder during a rush session. Obviously, the take was ruined. I pulled a sample
from another project, manually replaced it and and it was fine and undetectable.
Did I feel compelled to tell the drummer? No. I understand that this is a bit
different but we still are talking about deficiencies in the recording process,
regardless of who is to blame.

My point is this... if you are confident that your effort will benefit
them
, then do it. In your shoes, (At OP) with them out of contact, I
would press on with the samples and make a killer mix.

When they are back, give them the mix, let them listen and as they are, ask
questions. (do you like the mix, the drums, does it sound "right" to you?) Then
let them know what it took to get that... tell them. Then give them the option
to balk. If they do, offer to do it with the original sounds.

My suspicion is that if the mix rocks, they will thank you because they know
that the quality of the recording reflects well or poorly upon them as a band.

Being in management and sales for over 20 years, here's the customer service part:
  • You don't waste the time you have while they're away.
  • You do your best for their benefit.
  • You don't waste time on sounds that are half-a$$ed. If it is to you, it will likely be to them.
  • You give them something better than they expected.
  • You let them decide and THEN if they prefer half-a$$ed, you can let them have it and it doesn't impact their perception of your ability nor your reputation.
  • It is sometimes best to get forgiveness than permission. When they can't imagine it, they likely will not approve.
Now THATS what Im talking about.... anyway.... here“s an update on the situation!:

I finished the mixing with the samples, had the band listen to them and they totally loved them, then I told them what happened and at first the drummer was quiet so I didnt know how he was taking it, but then he just leaned back and said something like "It rocks dude" sooooo.... all thumbs up, green light, I burned the CD and theres your happy endind to the story!

THANKS TO EVERYONE WHO SHARED HIS OPINION/EXPERIENCE, lots of good things came out of this thread. Really, thanks! now lets get back to work! someones gotta make the music, right?
