Did you ever find out anything about the Perception 420, if people like it?

I just mastered an album that used that on all the vocals and acoustic instruments. They ran it through some crap digi002 preamps. I was rather impressed with the even frequency response the mic puts out. Not a harsh top end like so many low end mics around.

IMO this mic sounds rather dark.. I used it for quite some time. i found I would have to EQ my vocals a bit to brighten them up.. but that was used with a studio channel mic pre... I have yet to hear what this mic would sound like in front of a quality Pre.. so If you were to get one (420) I would suggest getting you a channel strip with EQ so at least you can have some control over how your mic will perform.

My brother in law got its little bro - the 220(i think) and uses it with an mbox for acoustic music. It's really quite a nice acoustic and vocal mic - I can only assume its more pedigreed big brother - the 420 - would be a fine purchase.

In its price range, though, I'd try one of the Audio technica mics - 4040 i think is in that price range, and also the Studio Projects CS1 (or CS5 for a bit more flexibility).

I have no doubts any of the three/4 mics mentioned, including the perception, would be fine and good enough to worry about the performance.

I am using AKG 420 microphones through Saffire Pro 26. Nothing wrong with sound and selectable polar patterns versus price make from this mic number one choice.
