Thread Starter | surprisingly awesome, surprisingly cheap studio monitors??
So yeah, i am looking for something cheap. Like.. $200 or less. I am looking for any no-name or DIY projects or something. I really want to get quality but I am on a tight budget. Lemme know what you think! no replies like "this is a lot to ask" or "you wont get quality at that price" or "behringer sucks".... I am searching for the poor man's monitors and i do not want to start a bash session with behringer. please help, and if you have links or pictures of DIY or other cheap monitors, lemme know!!! THANKS! |

Love my Samson resolves. $179, lots of good reviews, massive speakers, and sound just fine for the price. Many options, RCA, balanced 1/4, flat, and two other settings. Can't beat them for the price.

Tannoy PBM 6.5 (not the 8"!) Some bash 'em... but a great engineer can make a killer record with a pair. Paid $70 for the pair w/o tweeters, and $70 for tweeters... all online. |

| That's what I use. They sit next to a pair of KRK's and get 90% of the mix time. A very flat and workable monitor that compare favorably to some of the good standards out there. They're passive so you'll need a power amp.

| The Samsons are not bad. My father has a pair of the little ones. They seem to do the job. You could also look in to the Yorkvilles.

look for used Event 20/20. Hard to beat in that price range and WAY better than anything new.

JBL Control 1's, they're small but built of super quality, can handle up to 80 watts, put out plenty of bass if you feed it to them and are front ported. Great clarity, no hype (hi, lo, or mid). I use them for my near fields and they translate really well. Got 'em for around $75 at best buy 2 years ago. For big's I just use an old pair of Infinity RS9's and they work really well. The foam surrounds dried out (they're old) so I replaced the surrounds myself for the cost of a $24 kit. Easy to maintain, handle enough watts for a small studio and are built really well. |

Thread Starter | a few questions back!
Turbojets, Was that for a pair for $75 or $75 each? I am looking into those because it was the only ones I can find more frequently or for sale. Jeffguitar, Do you have links or places to check out for those Samsons? or even pictures so i know what I am looking for? Thanks so far for the information. Keep it coming, I will continue my research even more, but this is great, I like to know these opinions of people who work or at least heard these monitors |

If it's for mixing maybe you can find some NS-10's. Other than that I would say the Tannoy 6.5's. Both good for mixing! The Event 20/20 will be alot more "fun" to listen to then these. But your mixes wont translate as well.

200 for both. I am looking more into the jbl because it is the cheapest option mentioned and still has great reviews. I need links desperately to these other monitors. you all say they are cheap but everything I find it rounding off at $250 or just pushing my budget ever so. Also, were those JBL controls the Pros that you bought, or were they just the standard? I found the standard to be about $80 including shipping, but thr pros are easily into the $170+ range! again, cheap is the new black and I am looking for steals and deals and surprisingly great sound. Also, with all of my posts about budget gear, low end fixes and various dumb questions, i plan on posting some of my work and what I accomplished with all of this stuff and let you all know how it works out. |

Another vote on the Event 20/20. 10 years ago I bought a pair of 20/20bas new, paid about $800 for them. I had no complaints, I felt good about my purchase. I don't have them anymore, apparently they were purposely set on fire (long story).

I have a used pair of Event 20/20 I'd let go for a good price. Send me a PM if you're interested. I'm selling them because I just got some Focal Solo 6 monitors and don't need the Events anymore. Cheers, -- Don

Had a chance to listen to the Behringer 1030A... interestingly they were real good. Give it a try (before you bash )

Used Events - PS6 or PS8. Not perfect, but very good.

+1 to the Samsons, a friend has a pair of Resolv 65s, and mixes translate well. I prefer my Rubicons (ribbon tweeter) for the better imaging, wider sweet spot, and red LEDs.

I should know, I've done it (not album but single) and if I can do it then I guarantee that there are lots of truly gifted and amazing engineers who could do it (and quite possibly far better). so I guess what I'm saying is your analogy doesn't give those speakers much credit. they really are quite decent, maybe you should say that you can make a killer record with them if you learn them well. that's a better selling point LoL. sorry, I guess I'm stuck on the analogy and semantics of it all. never mind... starting the day off without caffeine :-) Cheers, Don

+1 for Alexis Monitor One Forget what people say... The original 8" Behringer Truths (B2031) are very usable and can be had new for $299. I'm sure that you can find then used for next to nothing. |

My first pair of "real" monitors was the old grey Alesis Monitor Ones. In that price range, I'd say grab a pair and rock out. They translated nicely for me. Monitor opinions are tough to gauge though, as everybody wants to hear something different. It's the most personal decision you can make really. War |

I would go for KRKs. I would not recommend Events. I used both 20/20s and had a pair of project studio 6's neither of which I could ever really like. We had the KRK rockit 5's in our studio as a 2nd set of monitors, in addition to our mains (Genelect S30ds) I found that the KRKs were so good that they didn't really work as a 2nd "crappy" set to check mixes on. I had to find something that was worse than them! I'm using them in our b room now and I think they're fantastic for the price.
