Thread Starter | ANY Tips for 12x11 room for drums?
Any tips for treating/tuning a room 12x11 with 8 foot ceilings for killer drum tracks? Carpeted floors with a bathroom attached (I was thinking a "trash can" mic in there would be cool) I have a motu 896, a UA 6176, 2 channels of SCA A12 mic pres (API clones), a dbx 160a for outboard. Mics: 2 new 451's, 1 Studio projects C1, 1 Rode NT2, 1 sm57, 1 sm7, and a 58. What would you all suggest for OH placement and and overall use of this mic collection on drums? |

id use the 451s as OHs, just affix some rigid fiberglass for absorption on the ceiling, giving the illusion of an infinitely high ceiling. Also its a small room but bass traps in the corners will probably help a lot. In a room that small I usually avoid a "room mic" alltogether, though you may get some decent results with something in the bathroom. Just dont be afraid to say "this isnt working, lets stick to the spot mics". I used to the have the UA 610 pre and Iloved it on snare.

Focus on the room. Corner traps of rockwool or 703 and 4" 703 on the ceiling. Take that room out of the equasion. Then find a good room in a box you have. DON'T cover the walls with carpet!! I speak from years of suffering with such a room. Everything else will be much easier. D |

thanks alot! I also have a hardwood living room about 15x 30, but i want a more "controlled" sound from the room...I'm tired of bouncy unfocused sound im getting. What is rockwool? why not carpet on the walls? I have fiberglass absorbers and some 2x2 diffusors...how would you or anyone, suggest I place the materials i have...and or rockwool?

If the funds are available the Auralex poject kit will help a great deal, then you can add some metroFusor's on the celing. It's not as low end as you may want, but it will make a tremondous difference in your room. Carpet will deaden the room too much and will make the recording sound very dry and dull. I have two bedrooms, one for tracking and one as a control room, I did both with the Auralex kit's, 70% wet 30% dry. Big difference in tracking as well a monitoring.
