If saying my opinion offends people to the point of getting messages, I guess I'll have to post less often on Gs, that's all.

Don't water yourself down for the riffraff dude. All you do by doing so is glorify their miserable existence.

I value the input of anyone who is determined enough to write and record their own music. We don't all have a bunch of close friends who we can discuss this stuff with in our own world. Sometimes we just need to talk at other like minded individuals and there's nothing wrong with that.

I hear ya, and I try to give the best advice I can based on the people's situations. I enjoy helping people when they need advice on gear.

im all for peoples opinions on gear. at the end of the day....it's sort of what this websites for?

i always try equipment before i buy it, but i've always tried different bits in the same category, the ONLY thing i bought without testing was the sm7b.

"By the way, I bought a MXL V69me today and I'll be putting a Nos Mullard from Bowie, I am so excited! This mic sounds great once you change the tube."

How do you know, if you haven't changed it, yet?

These are the kind of comments that make people question your credibility. Report on the mic AFTER you change the tube.

You're a talented guy with some nice recordings, but George Neumann you are not. Report your opinions, don't regurgitate what others have said.
Your opinions on mics blow with the direction of the wind.
It's not helpful when you have an opinion on every mic manufactured.

Flaming agressively, yes.

Pointing out that they might be misleading the thread with false information? not at all. A little bit of knowledge can be worse than none at all.

And if you do have to comment without any personal experience, simply mentioning as much would make a big difference. Sometimes it can be quite obvious when a poster who one minute asks something quite basic, then passes comment on what a $5k microphone they've never used sounds like.

I know a studio who has one w Nos Mullard tube, and I've tried it in the past, so shhh. it ain't rocketscience. See you can't assume that I've never tried this or that. I've actually been on a microphone quest for the past 2 months.

I think the problem is people are too impressionable. Nobody should take only ONE person's opinion on a forum before they buy something. That being said, if 10 people have an opinion on something, 9 of them like it and 1 doesn't, I wouldn't mind hearing more from the 10th guy to hear what bugs him. If he tells me something that is insightful, maybe I'll listen. I'll certainly value his opinion more than that of the person selling the product! If there's anyone who shouldn't comment, it's the people who make money off it! Some vendors are exceptions, but manufacturers simply can't be trusted.

So, who cares if a person states their opinion of a clip? If you disagree, disagree! I'm happy to read the disagreement and maybe learn something.

Why are we talking about a $5k mic in low-end theory anyway? Frankly a $5K mic should be dismissed by lowenders as a waste of money. If it's not, you're a high-ender.

This thread is like chicken soup for the gearslutz soul....

I like to share my methods. I try not to be too arrogant because I know some of the folks here have a lot of experience. The "wisdom" (if you can even call it that) I leave on these boards is to help others avoid the time/money wasting mistakes I've made.

One example is the countless number of people I've met who think their first dynamic mic should be something other than an SM57/SM58. I don't want to suggest that there is nothing else out there; there is. I just want young kids to know that most of the competition for that mic is BS. If you're buying your first mic don't reinvent the wheel here. The first mic I bought, $80 new, was some AKG piece of junk and I should have bought an SM58. This is avoidable and I hope to impart that kind of wisdom..... I've been flamed for saying this, by the way....

Anthony

i try not to talk about things i've never used, infact how can I? I do enjoy reading a range of people's posted opinions before i think about buying it though. A quick search for the product name on here, google for some reviews, ask a few people if they've used one, you know just a bit of common sense. I bought the ProFire2626, and NT55 mainly because of the reviews here, and my Red5 valve after using one at my college. I think people should keep posting thier experiences it certainly helps me out! There's not a lot to buy in town so all the stuff I need I have to order off studiospares or the like. People's opinions also helps me decide what to avoid so keep em comin!

Right. I only talk about what I've used. I've used far more guitars, pedals, and amplifiers than I have mics, pre-amps, and EQs, so I generally keep my mouth shut on those fronts. MAYBE I'll talk about gear that I know is IN use by famous artists or producers, but only from a fact-reporting standpoint and not imparting an opinion. I'm a chemical engineer in my regular life, and you learn early on that speaking out of your realm of expertise gets people killed, so I tend to caveat the crap out of the things I say on forums like these simply because I know that in the grand scheme of things I don't know jack sheet.

Everyone likes to feel like they made good decisions, that they spent their hard earned cash on the best gear and that they arent completely wasting their own time and money. Some people are just delusional twats about it.

like i said, i'm all for opinions, people who haven't used the gear. you can call their bluff with that anyways.

but as in the first poster stated.

you don't need to have the gear to KNOW what it sounds like.

hence isn't that sort of the reason we buy it??

or am i way off?
