Tascam 388 - Maintenance?

The tape is Quantegy 456 and age is 2000-2002. I still have an unopened tape of the same brand/make/age, do you think that would be alright to use?

The manual says to use 1800' 1 mil thickness tape. i'm pretty sure 456 is thicker than 1 mil. I'm sure it would be fine to use just to give it a test run. Tascam recommends 457 as a standard for the machine. Currently I'm using RMG LPR35 instead since it's easier to get than Quantegy where I am. It's a 457 equivalent.

We used 996 and 966, which was thicker than recommended. As far as we could tell, the only thing hosed up by using thicker tape was the counter.
