any Groove Tubes mics work great my favorite (though a little more expensive) GT67 Other faves on the room AT4050 pair (mid side, blumlein, or spaced typically for ROOM) CAD M179 (same as AT4050 for my preferences in technique) Shinybox ribbons (tried it as a drum room mic at friends studio AWESOME) I'm a fan of LDC on room especially those with multiple patterns. I also like a pair of ribbons in blumlein or m/s (beyers).

Under $1k? Haha - well, my room mic is generally either an akg c2000b or an oktava 319. I've consistently had great luck with both. They are way under $1k.

favorite sleeper mics for a pair, not just room mic'ing are the adk hamburg le pair and the cascade fathead blumlein pair. 2 distinctly different sounding mic pairs and both sets can be had for less than $1000. rich |

| I used to use those on piano at the first real studio gig I had. What do you like them for Jules? (besides for room mics, as the thread title would suggest) Last edited by Kronos147; 24th March 2009 at 12:55 AM.. Reason: clarification |

Yup. I whipped out the tranny, wind shield and mesh & re tensioned the ribbon and it sounds great. One of favourite outer kick mics at any price. Bass cabs & vintage vox too.

How about buying an old pair of Crown PZM mics labeled as radio shack. You can get the pair for $100 or less (even $60 a pair) and they're really quite nice as room mics. Especially rooms that may have trouble with too many reflections. Put them on the ceiling or the back wall and they'll do a fine job. Anyone else here done this? |

Get the Cascade Fathead II - Pair . Comes with stereo or mid/side configurable bar with shock mounts. These are the best mics for the money! You need ribbons!! the most talked about mics on this thread are the fatheads! They are amazing. Thinner ribbons like the rca's makes great drum and guitar mics.. vocal mics with an eq. MUST HAVE MICS!~!!! on any budget ![]() ![]() |

I'm an idiot and even I figured out how to solder XLR jacks onto them and replace the metal plates with lexan sheets.
