In my shopping cart I got some cheap drum mic set. Atm I think about going for AKG groove pack for 280€. Once I got that, or something similiar, in my locker I think I'll try to get some decent cardioid SDC pair.

[Edited to add one more mic, plus color commentary.]

This is my first post ... nice to meet you guys! Here is my humble collection of mics.
Large-Diaphragm DynamicSmall-Diaphragm Dynamic
Large-Diaphragm CondenserSmall-Diaphragm Condenser
That's 12 mics - 8 dynamic and 4 condenser.

For my purposes (non-professional home recording), this is a good collection. Covers most anything I'll want to record.

I don't want to have more than a dozen mics. 12 is a good round number for me.

However, I might sell one of my less useful mics in order to buy another. For example, I am thinking of selling one of the SM57s, and replacing it with a ribbon. Just in case I need to record some violin or something.

My Recordings/Credits

I made a lot of changes and I'm really happy with my simple setup right now. I realized that the balance between microphones (in their character) is as important as mics themselves. Right now I can record whole band and it sound great before mixing. So...

2 x modified Rode NT2
2 x AKG C414B-ULS
2 x AKG C451EB
Milab DC96b

2 x Sennheiser MD421
Sennheiser MD441
Beyerdynamic M88TG
AKG D19

(also 2 x AT4050, 2 x M160, 2 x 201, 2 x Coles 4038, RE20 but those are old news)

I love pairs... right now I'm looking for Neumann M7 capsule to mount it on AKG C451EB body and I would love to put Tim Campbell's capsules in C414. Then I'm done (for a while).

Awesome! How much is that costing you?

Also, how'd you currogate the foil? I'd be very interested in trying this!

Altogether maybe $150-200, but If I were to do it again without all the trial and error, that could probably be closer to $100 if I was thrifty. The big thing was the time investment and all the trial and error that went into just figuring out what works and what doesn't and fitting everything together. The transformer is easily the most expensive component, at around $60 or so, but my understanding is that you can get an Edcor one for about half that. As for corrugating the foil, I went to a model/hobby/RC store and found a set of gears that seem about perfectly sized.

[edit: it's worth noting that I've been saving the actual ribbon corrugation for last, and I've just been practicing on household aluminum foil so far, so I haven't actually tried it with real ribbon material]

I'll probably post a thread on it once I'm finished, I took a bunch of pictures of the process, so once I become less busy/lazy I'll finish it up and post pics and samples.

Awesome. DIYAudio is another great place if you're into building or are just of the tinkery persuasion!

Yes, it's all low-end. But I feel now like I could record most anything I wanted, and it would sound at least halfway decent.

My mic locker . . .

For my humble home studio, and covers band . . .

AKG Perception 220
Audiotechnica AE4100 x2
Audiotechnica AT3035
Audiotechnica ATM250
Audiotechnica ATM873R (very nice SDC for vocals)
Audix I5 x2
Audix OM3 x3
M-Audio Pulsar x2
Shure SM58
Shure SM57
Electrovoice PL80 (my fave live vocal mic)

Mics are expensive here in New Zealand, so I tend to go for good quality second hand stuff. I feel like I have covered the basics fairly well, so I might start picking up some "interesting mics", starting with a ribbon next.

Shure KSM32

Trying to get a little bit of versatility. What do y'all think would be the next logical step? A tube mic?
