Want to upgrade from my Rode NT1-a

Hi Everyone,
I'm currently working with a Rode NT1-a as my main LDC and am looking to upgrade but maybe stay in the same price range 200-300$ if possible. I'm wanting to sell my Rode as I think I could get a little more bang for my buck. I've been scoping out the Kel stuff but wasn't sure if there were any others in that range that people enjoy? I was also thinking Shure SM7b. Most of my vocals will be Female Vox but will also have some Male Folk / Alternative Rock. Any suggestions would be great. Thanks Everyone.

Question

all mics sound diferent,

make shure you listen www. studio auditions.com
thelisteningsessions.com
gearslutz shootouts , and A/B tests.
etc...

it all depends on whats the sound you are looking for.
classic neumann like sound?
super ultra crystal clear transformerless ?
crystal clear transformer or tube?
colored transformer sound or tube ?
dynamic? condenser ?
etc...

i like verry much the crystal clear transformerless of Audix cx-112
but thats me.

i also like audio-technica series of dynamic mics.
over shure sm-57/58

mic-pre, cables, ADC, wordclock also play a mayor role in sound design.

Versatility over Exact Sound

I'd like something a little warmer sounding. Think of 60s stuff like Simon & Garfunkel or the Mamas and the Papas. I know at my price level I don't have all the choices in the world and am really probably looking more for versatility over a specific sound. I'll probably also be using this LDC for recording my acoustic. Thanks.

if you want to upgrade from that mic, buy any other mic.

;-)

not a fan here.

sorry, that wasn't helpful at all.

get a good dynamic (sm7 or heil pr20/22/classic/fin) or a smoother ldc like a cad m179 (heard great props for the kel mics as well and there are other similar LDC for the price of the cad that are also good and much smoother than your nt1a).

The Heil Classic is being blown out at Musicians Fiend. I was always thinking about one, but couldn't justify the price on a showy, big-bodied mic that should sound mostly like the PR20 I already had.

At $150ish, I was in. Wow!

Used it as a single mic for a guitar/vox last week live. It was great.

How would you compare it to the HM7u? I have been seriously considering getting one of those for a less bright mic..

If you want something warm, go for the Kel Audio HM-7U, it sounds warm and it's only 250. It sounds fantastic for female vocals.

The Heil Classic isn't as "rich", but it has a nice presence and a pleasing off-axis sound. More punchy. Highs are there, but not so forward.

tINY,
It looks like the Heil Classic is going for 99$ now on Musicians Friend. I might have to grab that up. Also, I'm thinking of getting the Cad M179. I like the versatility of it and could use for many other things than just vox. Thanks.

+1

own the rock'n'roll hall of fame version of the heil classic, unbelievable mic and so inexpensive (even at full price). and it has a 80hz hpf switchable on the bottom which is a great helper.
