Wink New NEVE clone...

1st GAP Pre73 soundfiles on GS?

Not a shootout or anything particularly scientific going on. Just some testing and tweaking. The chain is DIY Telecaster-> Schecter/Bill Lawrence Quarterpounder-> THD UniValve-> Randall IsoBox-> SM57-> GAP Pre73-> Lucid 9624.

Stillwell Audio Vibe EQ, Stilwell Rocket Compressor, UAD EMT 140, UAD RE-201.

http://www.mixerized.com/files/GapPre73.wav

Just having fun. But the pre is excellent. Shines on bass as well.

Cheers - Pär

PS Maybe this isn't high-end - but it sure sounds like...

Hrrrrrm. Not a singer per se... We'll se.

But the idea of testing the GAP with the Brauner Valvet is kinda catching...

...on a more serious note, do you believe this "clone" exhibits any of the characteristics of classic 1073 tone?...when you drive it hard, does it produce any particular "colourization"?...is it noisey when you dial in the 3rd stage?...any comments as to the character of the pre?...your comments are welcomed...

The only thing I can compare it to with regards to short term sonic memory is the AMEK CIB. They both have that finished sound and where the GAP is thick the CIB is smooth. The pre is really quiet even driven hard and for colourization - yes.

Both have that mojo or grab I like. For what I'm supposed to use it - clean/dist guitar and support mic for acoustic guit - it'll be perfect.

A NEVE owner should chime in.

The price is 300$ so...

For clearance - I only record (mainly, mostly) myself. So - I search for solutions pleasing my own sonic aestetics*. And here the GAP Pre73 will shine. It *does*.

* Own sonic aestetics? He** yeah! I'm maintaining a set-up of up-and-running songwriting/recording studio. For my pleasure! H******** ** ***!

...my friend...if you would be so kind...what are the exact specs on the PRE73 power supply?...24VAC output, but how many amps?...I am trying to get one to use in the US, but the stock power supply is for 220VAC input, so I am researching a 110VAC/24VAC alternative...your input is much appreciated...thanks!

I'd rephrase that as: "300$ for a NEVE clone?".

Yes!

The vocal file has an incredibly high noise floor. Is that the pre-amp or the crap branded mic?

Nope. The lo freq noise is a high-gain amp not shut off (hum) and the hiss is a loud Mac G5 standing next door. I still haven't found a suitable door between the womb and next room. There is also a tad of rumble from the fire stove breathing and fire crackling.

Picking up subtle ambient sounds is the trademark of the Brauner Valvet.

Unless I'm missing something obvious?

thumbsup

You might need some better conditions for your recodings, no?

Sounds like a bargain really...
I think from now on no one can complain they can't afford a professional sounding pre-amp to record.

I adjust when it comes to recording crucial stuff. It's a great bang for the buck machine. I'll try to record a complete song with it when the soundcard is back from repair. I hate latency.

Well for three bills, I'm willing to roll the dice... Just placed my order today. Anthony at Alto Music says that the U.S. power supplies should arrive in the next couple of days. I'm looking forward to pairing this with my Pearlman TM-1 and seeing what comes out the other end.
