Good Guitar tone from a $400 amp?

hey guys,

I wanted to post this link to an mp3...I did get the bands permission.

The guitar sound is a Peavey Windsor head thru a orange 4/12 cab.

the mic is Cascade Fat Head going thru an API 512 and a distressor.

we did this in Pro Tools

I think the results are quite good.

Index of /media/DOS

the song is "scientist"

The amp is $400...it's a good copy of a JCM 800.

For those of you looking for this type a tone..you can't go wrong with this amp.

that guitar is a windsor!!!

wow. i was plannig on buying one bc someone said it can sound like a plexi (im a huge evh fan) but this sounds 'too heavy' for my taste.

do you know what the EQ was looking like when they did this, or if an OD was used, etc etc.

the gtr left is just the straight amp and guitar no effects.

the gtr right I added my mxr micro amp at 12 oclock.

overdubs done the same way.

the eq on the channel is an SSl Waves EQ

Price and quality aren't directly related. Heck, i've got some of the best bass sounds using an Epiphone Valve Jr. preamp, and I only paid like $200 for that thing.

There's a REALLY weird sound right right before the group singing comes in. Something distorted that just isn't "right" in this mix. Sounds like something plugged in with a bad cable or something for that part.

Otherwise it sounds good.
