I need to make crappy recordings

What are some of your favorite portable 4 or 8 track recorders out there? Many years ago I liked the Tascam 488, and I am looking for something like it: small, simple and inexpensive with a decent enough sound. Cassette... minidisc... new... old... whatever! And just so you know, I do not want something software based.

I dig the ethic!!!

"I need to make crappy recordings"

Cool...I really love the Yamaha MT100 II...I just saw one go on Ebay real cheap and it was New In the Box.

I had one that I used for years and years. I finally gave it to Miranda Lee Richards and I heard she used it then passed it on to someone else and that as of a couple of years ago it was still making demos!

Edit* There are a couple of MT50's on the 'Bay right now; I've not used that unit, but they're cheap. Thinking of snaggin' one myself now that you got me thinking about 'em.

tascam 246 portastudio 4track cassette all 1/4" and rca's, 6 channel pre's, inserts, prg in and out, rec out, vu meters with peak indicator,2speed cassette, dbx, pitch control, talent cue mix, remote punch in,2 headphone jacks, staight ahead easy to understand manual, sweepable eq's,2 effects sends, monitor section, mono switch, programmable tape return,i could go on and on,it's built like a tank. use it every weekend to record band practice never had a single problem!!!!!!!!!!!!even with no external pross'n the pre's are full sounding. easy to use. it's made me a better musician by far, flick a switch and play instead of playing with gear and lossing inspiration.i have a full blown studio centered around a soundcraft ghost and hd 24 but most every idea starts on the tascam and pretty much gets worked out there first and if it's worthy it makes it to the hd 24. very handy indeed
