Will this home made vocal booth make a difference

Hi all - I'm currently deciding between two different routes to help get better vocals: either the SE Reflexion Filter or a home made booth that someone near me is selling on Craigslist.

I've posted pictures of the booth below - I know it's tough to see a lot of detail, but you can get a general sense of what it's all about.

Both will run me about the same $$$-wise. With that in mind, which do you consider the better investment to improve vocals?

Interesting, I thought for sure I'd have some people going for the reflexion filter.

So here is the second question - HOW MUCH better will the booth be? My concerns are that:

- It is a commitment to take that thing on and put it somewhere (and convince my wife that it looks ok in our newly finished basement!)
- It doesn't seem to be ventilated so i don't know if I'll get too hot in it during the summers
- It will cost me $75 more

So...will I really see that much of an improvement? My attraction to the SERF is that it costs less, can be easily tucked away and is portable (not that I'm doing much recording elsewhere, but nice to have the option).

...if you don't want to commit to the booth (I saw it on Craigslist too), you might find this handy and more cost effective:

SM Pro Audio | Mic Thing Portable Microphone Isolati | MTG | B&H

...I use one and it's actually quite good...comes with a heavy duty boom stand and it's more adjustable (and lighter) than the Se...when I want more isolation I take another boomstand (with the boom in a "T'" formation) and throw a movers blanket over it and place it behind the vocalist...I use mostly dynamics lately (SM7, Heil PR40) so this setup actually performs quite well, as ambient room noise is not an issue with the dynamic mics...works OK with condensers with tight cardioid patterns too...money well spent!

I personally would have gone for the reflection filter as you would get a bit more room colour in the sound (live room) but this all depends on your room and its sound, as opposed to a full booth, which might even deaden the sound so much you would have to compensate during the mix stage (or by sticking cd's to give a bit more reflection inside the booth)

either way, you got problems so decide which might benefit you more!

id go with the reflexion filter. does a good job of deadening the room and is very flexible and can be used for plenty of things besides vocals.

Get the filter and treat the wall behind the vocalist and the sides with 703. That will be superior to that booth im willing to bet.
