Micing Synthesizers.

Good evening,

So I am currently running various synthesizers through an old Traynor Voice Master which goes out into a 2x16" bass cabinet. I'm quite fond of the sound, and would like to capture it, to mix in parallel with synths running into my coverters through a di-box. Currently, my only mic is a 57'. Will probably be picking up a E/V ND468 quite soon (to be used on a guitar cabinet, incidentally also running from the Traynor).

But my question is this: what (affordable) mics could I be look into for micing the synth-cab? Should I consider a couple of condensers to use along with the 57, both standing from varying distances? Anything in particular? Perhaps even something like a D112 would be suitable? I will be recording all sorts of sounds, from thumping basses, to airy leads.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

- Peter

A 57 should suit you just fine.. I might even consider building a DIY subkick.. just take an 6-8" speaker and use that as a mic to pick up all the sub-100Hz thumpy goodness. But then again, your DI channel would probably be taking care of that already.

Yeah a 57 would probably be just fine.

However, I did mic a Yamaha MO8 keyboard at a live jazz recording one time with the AKG C3000B and it came out really nice. So if the 57 doesn't work for you, and you could try one out, you might like it.

I'll often re-amp VST synths and e-pianos through a guitar amp. I mostly use an SM57, Sennheiser E609 or Cascade Fathead for that. If the ND468 is anything like the old ND408, it's a pretty bright mic. I think I remember liking it on hi-hats. It wouldn't be my first choice for a guitar cab, no matter what the choice. However, my ND408 has been sitting on the shelf for a while, and it's probably worth a try.
