Smile Audiofire 4 Heavy Guitar

Let me know what you think guys!

It's just two tracks with eq & limiting (the amp is really a bias modded 6505+ btw)

(sorry about the sloppy playing)

This track proves that the preamps on the Audiofire interfaces are decent.

The only problem is the HISS like shit when driven hard. So running dynamics like a SM7 or SM57 is asking for trouble. Condensers work fine though.

Would you mind tell some more about in what situations you hear hiss from AF4?

I must push the gain close to max before I hear any noise. Dynamics typically is used close to the source.

I can imagine a problem with passive ribbons at a distance for acoustic music though.

Well, I record in my own home and can't really play my guitar very loud. So even when close micing I need a LOT of gain to get a decent signal from my SM7B. I have API and GR pre's for this, but just for the hell of it I used the AF4 pre's ones. It was HISS central. When I push up the gain on the API or GR it dead silent. Of course, it's not a fair comparison pricewise.

Thanks for the comments guys.

I really don't think these preamps are noisy until you get the gain REALLY high. Like you said though, if you were recording a quiet source with an sm7 or a ribbon of some sort, I could see a situation where you would have to crank the preamps way up there and at that point you might start getting some noise.

I'm sure these preamps probably aren't in the same league as API's (can't really comment because I've never used any "high end" pres), but I think they are quite competent for the price range range.

Before the Audiofire I had a firepod, and I never got guitar tones anywhere near this. Part of that could be due to the fact that I've "learned" my monitors better and as a result I did a much better job of eq'ing, but I think the Audiofire was a step up.
