Robotic mic placement idea. Now with Video

I'm going to get one or more of these and attach amp mics and stands to so I can remotely find the sweet spot. It will take some Mcgivering to adapt everything.

::Robotic Ninja Camera Mount!::

I already have an x10 home automation setup in my studio to click on and off the tracking room headphone mixer/amps, dim the tracking room lights and even automatically turn on and off a recording light in sync with Sonar.

I'll let you all know how it goes.

If you are going that far why not mount (Mcgiver) the bottom of the stand to one of these:

let us know how you get on, I've been thinking of something similar, although I'm not sure that particular piece will be able to get all potential positions. Also it might not support the weight of the mic as the cameras it is made for a very light

I've wanted to do that for the longest time but never had the smarts to make it happen. Awesome to see someone doing it!

By the way the pan and tilt units are much cheaper on ebay as all x10 stuff is.

A few years ago there was a thread here about remote controlled robotic mic stands, & someone here said he was designing one, and apparently there was also one on the market or about to come on the market at the time.

Was that you, lebouche?

I think a few clasic echo chambers used to have remote control over the speaker\s possition in the room, X Y Z axis.
You should look into that.

I was one of those who built one, worked great and very quiet...
The control signal could be sent down a tie/mic line...

Seems like you'd also want to control extension as well.

I mean, angle is important but it's distance between target and mic and between mic and unwanted targets that is crucial to phase, dynamic, and timbre issues.

Yes, but that would really complicate the design...

Why not just get a full blown robot intern?

An Asimo!

What was I thinking?
I wonder how well it takes insults and nicknames.

I had a revelation (Duh) that simply screwing on a female flange to the bottom of the Ninja and a male flange to the top and off we go.

As far as weight is concerned I plan to load it with neutered sm57s (No Trannys) for the guitar amps and I use a M-201tg on the snare whitch is the other planned application.

First things first though.
I have most of December booked so there won't be much time to work on it. But I hope to track at least the last band of the month's guitar with the robo-mic. which is still vapor.

I'll post pics if not a cheesy phone video when I have something.

There's actually a forumite here at GS that was designing a robotic arm specifically for mic placement. I can't remember his name though. If you search "robotic arm" you'll probably find the thread(s).

Ok,
So I did it.
It was easy and it works!

I bought a female mic flange and a male one. I attached the female flange to the bottom of the x10 Ninja pan and and tilt device with screws and nuts. I attached the male flange to the top of it in the same fashion. The bottom screws to a mic stand, the top flange receives the mic clip. I have a pan and tilt remote for it. voila! RoboMic.

I have a power trio coming in Tuesday where I plan to give it a go.

That photo was taken moments before the robot tricked the lady and instead of shaking her hand it killed her.
