Has anyone made their own homemade keyboard dust covers?

I'm looking to make my own keyboard dust covers.

Has anyone else done this?

If so what kind of material did you use, and where did you get it from?

I don't know if I have the technical skills to make a square cover that would go over the keyboard and around the sides. I'm really just looking to find the right material and just cut out a large enough rectangle.

Any thoughts? Suggestions?

Do you have a sewing machine? If not it may be kind of a pain in the @$$.

I would suggest the outside be a synthetic, because I believe it would be more efficient at keeping dust out, and line it with a soft fabric like cotton so it doesn't scratch the keys or anything.

Measure the width, height, and length, and then make a panel for each side, giving yourself an extra inch, and then sew it all together. Does that make sense? I can't think of an alternate phrasing.

However, if you aren't experienced with sewing, it may be more time efficient to purchase one. Maybe someone has an alternate method??

Good luck!

I used to get clear vinyl (by the yard) from fabric stores (walmart has it now too), cut it to shape, and make seams with superglue. Worked extremely well and looked better than anything comercially available.

I just have a piece of dark blue cotton fabric that's slightly oversized, I lay it on the keyboard and the edges naturally flop down over the sides... it cost a dollar a yard at Walmart. Am I missing something, here?

Are we talking instrument or computer keyboards? Not, I guess, that it matters, except that a really nice comptuer keyboard costs maybe $40 or $50 (and a cheapy can be had for $5 or $10, likely) and a really nice 88 key, piano-weighted MIDI controller costs a lot more...

I don't cover my comptuer keyboard (a venerable MS Natural that very much shows that not only is it not ever covered but that I eat 3 meals a day in front of it. I'm old; I'm single; I do what I want. )

My MIDI controller, on the other hand, stays covered. At first I tried crafting various covers out of trash bags. (88 keys makes a long board but I found that by slitting the sides of a big kitchen-sized bag I could cover the whole board, anchoring it with tape. (The tape was a bad idea; it took some careful cleaning to get the residue off.)

After a while, I just bit the bullet and ordered a 'gig bag' for the controller and leave it, unzipped and 'upside down' covering the keyboard with the top flap draped across the back of the board, covering the cables, etc. Biggest problem is that people seem to think it's some kind of comfy looking bench. I've had to stop a couple of folks from sitting on it. (No kidding. One was a musician!)

I use my old "dark cloth" ---what I used in the 70/80's shooting my view cameras ...you know the big hooded cape that went around one, to keep the light out. Works great on our Kurzweil and one on the Yamaha. They were lined with a silky satin on one side and heavy fabric to the other.....

I've got my own, very cheap solution to this. I use old thick white t-shirts, one of them is actually fom the early 90's! But it never wears out as all it does is sit on top of my gear! I do wash them every so often though.

go to a fabric store and get Fake silk. It looks good and comes in bed size sheets.
When im away I drape them over my entire desk.

People come in and go HOLY HELL THATS SILK!!! ee...
Works great and covers my synth and both displays and two speakers.

Same with my guitar effects on the ground and mixer. Slice of fake silk..
I got red and blue both are stunning looking and about $15 total room.

One whip of the hand and the silk is removed from my entire surface.

I used my old fitted full sized sheet. Washed out the cum stains and it's good to go. Doesn't smell funny anymore....

Sorry, had to say it...
