Recording samples of Peluso CEMC6 matched pair (Omni caps)

Hello Everyone,

Here are some samples of the Peluso CEMC6's. Theese samples are from a live recital I did May 18th in Manhattan, the piece is the Flute Sonata by the french composer Francis Poulenc. This recital was done in the basement of the Marble Collegiate church in Manhattan, so the acoustics are not great, never-the-less I think this give you an idea of the sound of the Pelusos. The pianist was Deborah Jamini, who teaches at Mannes College of Music.

The rig I used is a portable rig I use for live recording, so the preamps are not great, but decent.

So the setup is as follows:
Peluso matched pair (Omni caps) > Roland MMP2 > M-Audio CO2 digital converter > Creative Jukebox 3 (using Optical in). This was recorded at 44/24.

The microphones were setup in an XY setup about 8 feet from the ground and about 3 feet from where we were performing, pointing downward a bit in between the piano and the flute. (The flute was to the left of the piano)

The only processing I did, was to use Waves' X-noise plug-in to get rid of some hum and Waves' L3 Ultramaximizer to bring the levels up. Conversion to MP3 was done using Samplitude 8 at 192 Kbits.

FILES:
1st movement

2nd Movement

3rd Movement

Any questions or comments are welcome and I can be reached at sunflute at yahoo dot com. my website is www.sunflute.com

Thank you for listening,
Peace
Marco Granados

Dear Marco,
Nice performance of one of my favorite flute pieces.

The recording is not bad at all for a live, self engineered set up. I do wonder what changes the hum reduction had on the file. Also, I think your Roland MMP2 is distorting on the input. I'm not familiar with the unit, but I assume you can control the input trim. The overall tonality reminds me a bit of the AKG 451 series. The pelusos are fairly mellow in the high frequencies compared to other omnis I have used like Schoeps and DPA.

I am wondering if you are playing from a different edition than I am familiar with, as I heard what may be a wrong note or accidental about 50 seconds into mvt 3.

CORRECTION

Thank you Mike,

I am re-uploading the files again, this time WITHOUT the application of the Noise reduction plugin, as I think (you are right) it was changing the sound from its original quality.

Peace
Marco

I'm sure someone more knowledgeable than me will be along in a minute to correct me, but I was under the impression that XY was more of a config one uses with cardioids as opposed to omnis, which are more often used in spaced A/B type arrays?

Thank you, it was my mistake and I have already been corrected about this on another forum. Next time I will use the spaced omni setup.

Thank you.

Of course, you don't have to do widely spaced omni's with 2 mic stands. You can do variations on ORTF or put a baffle between the mics for better separation. 1 mic stand can keep the visual distractions to a minimum.

Also some of the most famous engineers use omni mics in coincident XY (some call it 'fat mono'), but not as the only array. Additional mics would be used for a wider stereo image of course. The biggest problem with XY and omni is that when used at distance, there will be little stereo width.

Looking forward to hearing the files without processing.

I already re-uploaded the unprocessed files to the website. They have the same name and links as the ones before. The old ones were replaced.

I would be curious to hear if you notice any difference.
Keep me posted, please.
Thanks

Yes, thank you! It sounds more lively and less covered from what I remembered before. Now I am anxious to hear the mics with your new Millennia pre!
