Kel hm-7u

Here is a quick comparison I did

Preamp : Avalon AD2022
Microphones : KEL HM-7U
Soundelux U195

Preamp was set the exact same for both channels. Mic was about 8" from instrument (Same take). They were as close together as they could possibly be. Dry recording. Havent decided which I like more just yet. I know this is far from a isolated or controlled test. Just gives people an idea (I see there is not much info on the KEL).

i was afraid to listen to this, but did it and yes, the kel sounds much better. the other is just thin and lifeless, no "invisible" shades of air around the tones, no real musicial reaction.

I can only test it next to a Soundelux U195, Audix SCX25, Rode NT1A and a Fathead if anyone is dying to hear something. I listened to these clips for a while last night, and I do prefer the KEL...

maybe the 195 is better when a little tape saturation is part of the process....

You know the 7u is nice on vocals too?

Has anyone had the chance to do a direct comparison between the HM-7U and an AT4047? While I've seen a few comments saying that they sound similar, their frequency plots would suggest at least some difference in response. I'm particularly interested in how the HM-7U deals with sibilance. I'd also be curious to hear if anyone has tried the HM-7U on upright bass.
Thanks.

I have an AT4047 and recently got an HM7U. They are similar sounding.
I can't comment on bass, I use mics for voice-over.

The HM7U is a thick sounding mic with no accentuated high end. No problem with sibilants. Strong low end and a bumped up midrange.
It is not your typical "strident" sounding inexpensive mic.

Because they sound so similar, I'm selling the HM7U and keeping the
$600 AT4047.

The KEL was plugged in for about 15 minutes. If anyone wants a real deal, I'll sell it for $200 with shockmount.

Thanks for that feedback. I just sent you an email. I also have an AT4047, but I could use another similar sounding mic, so I was wondering if the KEL could be it. I'm looking for a non-hyped mic that could be used for vocals (both spoken and sung), on upright bass, and possibly in front of a jazz kick drum.

Engage the fat switch and redo your U195 clip.

hey Kurac, the kel does not sound as nice on that prim as the other. But for vocals, probably much better. Can you post a vocal track comparison?

Tesko mi je....

I'm surprised it was so thin sounding then. That doesn't seem right.
