Thread Starter | Cheapo pre-amp for Beyer M130
Hello, newbie here . I’m thinking of buying a pair of Beyer M130 ribbon microphones. They’ll either be used as drum overheads, or else in a Blumlein pair for recording choirs, etc.Does anyone have any experience of using these with cheap and cheerful pre-amps? My system is about as low end as you can get (Yamaha AW16G or Athlon PC with M-Audio Audiophile 2496 sound card). I’ve got a couple of small desks (Yamaha MX12/4 and Soundcraft Folio SX) but realise they’ll be no good with the M130s. The ART DPS II looks good on paper as it has a reasonable amount of gain and variable input impedance. I can buy one here in the UK for just over £200. Anyone used one of these with the Beyers, or possibly suggest something else at a similar price point? Two M130s and a DPS would cost me less than £1,000, which is about $1,800. I’m not in a position to spend much money on what is only a hobby. On the other hand, I guess I am a bit of a slut who does like to have toys to play with. Any recordings made are for my own consumption, with maybe the occasional demo for my band. Any advice would be very gratefully received. Thank you! |

several years ago I use Beuer 260s (ribbons also) with an ART Tube ProMP and it worked well. There's a decent amount of gain on those. I was recording brass, trumpet and trombone.

man, a pair of m130s, that should be a great drum recording rig. i use m260s on drums and love what they do to snares and cymbals. anyway, i think clean and clear preamps pair nicely with beyer ribbons, they have plenty of color on their own. in which case you have some decent cheap options. sytek pres would be sweet. you get 2 extra, and you can pick them up used for $700-$800 USD, which is chump change for your currency. i like my sx202, symetrix. can you get a hold of one of these? stock its cool, easy to mod... $150 for two channels. |
