| DIY Pre73 mods Hello fellow Slutz! I'm new here, so for my first post... I've been reading for months, and this forum is such an amazing source of knowledge and experience that it's taken me this long to come up with a question I couldn't find an answer for. I've read the Pre73 threads till my vision goes blurry, so I hope my question isn't answered somewhere in the depths. I'm looking to expand my gear selection to make my ITB setup a little less sterile, and I've settled on the Pre73. My dilemma, however, is that there's no way I can afford Warren's full upgrade mod at the moment, and I have a project that I need it for ASAP. To my ears the mod makes a HUGE difference, and after hearing about possible biasing errors on the stock transistors, I was sold (but without the necessary fundage )My question is, what are the correct capacitor values, and how many are needed? Also, is there a reliable source out there to get the Motorola transistors or a modern equivalent? What do I need to know for biasing? The transformers will be fairly straightforward once I get them shipped from the UK. I have some soldering skill, and a bench tech friend who will do it for a 6 pack of good Belgian Ale if I have all the parts and info ready for him.thumbsup Any insights are appreciated!

| Gary, Thanks for the reply. I suppose if I'm being realistic the amount of time and effort and frustration wouldn't exactly be proportional to the amount of increased sound quality. Maybe I'll just do the transformers and call it a day, since that seems to be the most important part. It would kinda suck though to buy 2 Pre73's and they end up having different bias voltages and different output levels. |

| Ive seen way too many people having problems with the Pre-73s. Blown fuses, weird noises, or just plain not lighting up at all. I wouldnt waste my time on one, unless it was free. |

| The were a batch that came out with the wrong fuse, but that's about all I've heard. They sound great unmodded, and what the heck else is out there for $299 that sounds as good. There are a ton of people that have them and love them. You can use whatever you want, but I like the Pre, and I hope the GAP continues to sell and deveope product.

| Mine have hours and hours of use on them at this point. They came with the wrong value fuse which I changed before I racked them. I have had zero problems with them. Not a crackle, not a pop. They work perfectly. I consider them one of my better buys. |

| This Pre is at the top of my list! I can't think of anything else that would have such a significant impact on my sound for such a small cost. |

| +100000..Mine blew it's fuse 2 days after I got it, but I actually investigate gear before I buy it and knew about the fuse issue..GAP was nice enough to tape a new proper fuse right to the Styrofoam that held the GAP in the box!!! |

| So I finally got it! My first dedicated mic pre.. ![]() Just hooked it up to my NTK mic.. Im feeling it! But not sure Im feeling the mic.. cant wait until I get a Sm7b to try out on it.. Just a few things.. whats up with the MIC/LINE knob?!?!? With my OUTPUT Cranked, Starting from -35 (in between -30 and -40) I start to get a signal. This keeps increasing for every step I turn (even the Off setting?) until I hit -65 (in between -60 and -70) there is no signal any more. Then when I move it one step ahead again -70 the signal is back and it keeps increasing until I can not move the knob any more and that is between Off and 10. Is this the way it should be? And also When do you use the Phase switch? Is this for instrument recording with 2+ mics? Or do you ever engage this setting for vocal tracking? Cos I can hear that the sound changes when the phase switch is engaged the sound becomes a bit more.. rounder maybe and some what smoother.. but also not as sharp. And when do you engage the Low-Z? Sorry for my nobe questions... ![]() |

| Just got my 73 today. After some noodling, I can say I'm very happy with it. Haven't tried it with a real vocalist, but it sure makes a difference on my crappy vocals. But in fact, I was mostly looking to see how it works with bass guitars. And it does. I always hated the sansamp crap I've been stuck with (along with interface pres), and this does sound a lot better. Especially happy with what it does for slap bass when an ever so small amount of overdrive is dialed in. |

| Lives for gear | I got mine full mod from zen pro audio. I still can't beleive how good this thing is. I've tried it on vocals guitars electric and acoustic, I want to try it on drums. I have used a um70s geffel thru it ...pure cream. |

| AMS was supposed to have them in last Friday and I confirmed they would ship today. On Saturday I looked at the website and found they were backordered until April 4th. According to AMS the Golden Age people had the units scheduled to be there last Friday but the shipment was never recieved. AMS callled GA and then found there wasn't going to be a shipment. Lame I got my money back today. |

| There's one on Ebay right now sitting at $240, with 1 bid, closing in about 3.5 days. Used is probably your best bet right now until new stock starts becoming available. And even then, the demand is just building, so they may just all sell out again really quickly and we'll be right back where we started. |
