Aren't the Chamelon 7622s basically the same thing as these?

Those things are 2 1073-type pre sections with external power and I believe they are the same price. About $300 a channel.

Hi all,

Great pre for vocals, full smooth sound.
I like it on snare and kick,The pre really brings the snare forward in the mix, the sound seems to maintain that first initial transient giving you the impression of a fuller sound, With the kick you get all the bottom you will ever need.
The pre also handles heavy distorted guitars easily, it does n´t crap out or sound harsh as do cheaper preamp designs.
What I like most about them is it is easier to place the mics, have an assistant place the mic while you listen through the monitors and you will hear the sound change with only minor adjustments, the preamp can reproduce lots of detail.

It is really excellent for the price. I am really happy with mine.
I now have 2

I pm'd him for a price... haven't heard anything back. Is the price a secret, or if anyone here got a price, were you asked not to post it? I guess I'll try e-mail next...

...my guess is that since he's not a regular here on GS, he's not checking for PMs...in my experience, quickest response is by phone...also very prompt with emails...the price is essentially the same as in Europe...but since this is the first initial run of GAP units here in the US (only 12) I suspect the crew at Alto are proceeding in a respectfully conservative manner until they have some hands-on experience with the product...Anthony has been most professional in answering questions and keeping those of us who have already ordered units in the loop (in particular, where the acquisition of proper power supplies for the US 110v usage are concerned)...I suggest you call him if you are serious about purchasing one of these initial supply...

...also, in light of some of the quality control issues that seem to be surfacing with some of the other Chinese Neve "clone" units from the group-buy, these particular GAP PRE73 preamps appear to be a great value...having established high-end audio dealers such as Golden Age (in Sweden) overseeing the QC of these units, and Alto Music (in NY) handling the distribution here in the US is a definate plus...I'm looking forward to putting one to use once the power-source issue is solved...the reason that it has been a bit of a fiasco is that this particular design utilizes a 24V "AC/AC" power supply rather than the more common "AC/DC" power supplies used here in the US...AC/AC power supplies are much harder to source and are in limited availibility here in the US...I'm sure that once a suitable supply is located (which appears to be very soon), then there will be more continuity in the distribution of the units...considering that the group-buy participants waited months (and some are still waiting), I'm glad to know that these will soon be available in relatively short order...

...after seeing the interior pics of the PRE73, I suspect they may be closer than we think...once a few more of these get put to use we'll soon know if they are "as good as", "better than" or "not as good as" the CL versions (which seem to get more props for their EQ than their preamps)...but for those of us who don't need a dual-channel pre, this is a most affordable option...

- yeah, I have a group buy 1073. So far, mine seems to work fine - well worth the wait. Fixes for any of the minor problems should be available in short order.

...so if you do decide to grab one of these as well, you'll be able to provide some objective comparison of the two preamps...just curious, what was your final cost including shipping for your group-buy 1073?...I totally missed out on that opportunity, but always had pretty high regard for 797Audio's microphone products in the past (particularly their capsules/diaphragms)...they have always been one of the better manufacturers in China...

That place is sick.

We used to live 5 minutes from there in Monroe.

Middletown is about 15 miles up rt 17. Really easy.

I'm afraid I can't afford one of the GA pre's yet. I'd be all over one if: a) my economy were better, and: b) I hadn't done the group-buy - oh, well. If the GA pre were less expensive, which I really didn't expect, I'd try to swing it. I actually thought it would be more. That's why I wanted to know the price. Of course, something similar to the GA at the group-buy raw prices would probably be a third to a quarter of the price, but you've already addressed the issues there - maybe next time, if Chance decides to do it.

Hey Anthony,

Any tracking info for those of us who placed their orders? Just wondering when this thing is going to hit my doorstep.

Thanks.

Hey Coyoteous, what did you pay for your group buy pre, if you don't mind me asking? I wanted to get one of those, but I was turned off by the whole ritual.

I was glad when the GA came out, even if it's only a single channel, as it's something that I can just order and put to use, even if it may cost a bit more.

I bet by this time next year you'll see a slew of these Chinese Neve clones on the market, in and and two channel flavors, but I need one now, and the GA is reasonable priced.

Got mine today. Haven't plugged it in yet though. Though its pretty straight forward, I'd expected it to include a manual which it did not. Anyone else not get a manual/warranty card or anything?

I was fairly stunned to receive mine today!!! I think it shipped Tuesday. A good omen, perhaps? The box was weird though. It looks like it was printed 30 years ago. Those wacky Chinese!
