Recommendations for first bits of outboard gear?

Hello,
I've been mixing mostly in the box. Well completely in the box useing whatever plugs I can find. While I manage to get the sound I'm looking for I want to get my hands on some outboard gear.

I currently only have the following occupying my rack. A Firestudio + 8 chan Presonus Adat and an S-phone headphone amp.

I am thinking I would like to get a stereo compressor, st EQ, and perhaps a pre, but I am fairly happy with the microphone sounds I've been getting.

I was thinking about a DBX compressor as they can be had for pretty cheap. But I dont know how they sound compared to something like an RNC.

What are your recommendations for good sounding outboard gear at a good price?

Thanks!
Josh

I purchased an RNC as my first piece of outboard gear... you will not be disappointed by this unit, its a good all round unit and gives a transparent sound. I've heard many things about the DBX though.

I agree... the RNC is a great place to start. It's pretty clean, and you can get them cheap on ebay/craigslist/etc. DBX compressors are great, too! I work at a pro studio and many producers I've worked with ask for the RNC (one even brought one in)... they chose it over the UA 1176, EL8, and DBX. Not saying one is better than the other, but rather, different. I love the 1176, but my first compressor was the RNC.

I'd start with a reverb. Frees up a lot of CPU horsepower.

Yes, Reverb is a good choice I think. But if you have a very powerful computer, I would start with an compressor. Buy a 1176 or SSL Mixbus Clone if you have the chance. The are affordable and very good.

Thanks for the suggestions guys! Can I record two mono tracks (like kick and bass guitar) at the same time with the RNC?

As far as verbs go, whats a good unit? I never like any of the reverb plugins. :( The one I liekd best was sonnox oxford reverb I demo'd but I couldnt justify the cost.

Great point about freeing up space CPU though! I just bought (upgrading from 1gb) 3gb of ram. Going to install tonight as one of my projects was lagging really bad. So I need to figure out how to freeze and still automate volume fades using sx3. ;\
