All good points, it does seem the mullards or other NOS GOOD tubes widen the sweet spot on this unit. It may never be a Great River but with the right guy at the knobs it may never matter. For my use, I don't stack pre-amped tracks so it's only vox and bass and some guitars through it. Never 10-20 tracks through the MPA. I do have an NOS RCA 6072A in my modded Apex460 and, yeah, it helped there, too.
Great thread.

Smile New Clip

Well guys, i finally made time to remix it a bit. I pulled the guitars down 1.5db and added a tad bit more low end. I scooted the guitars closer together in phase instead of farther away because it actually added that little bass i was looking for in the guitars. What i did to widen them up was put a stereo imager in the last part of the chain when i was mastering. Let me know what you guys think? Better, Worse? Oh, and also i finally got my chameleon pre amp in the mail. Im sure ill be posting a new clip within the next few days!

Since we're feelin' the MPA love here, I thought I'd add a quick track I did for my harp player, so he would have something to work out his parts to.

The chain here is a MXL 960 into the MPA (through a Jan Phillips 12AX7) for the vocals. The acoustic is an MXL v67g into the MPA (through a Mullard 12AX7). BTW, I don't normally use the v46g for acoustic, but it happened to be on the stand...

I'd love to hear it with the harp in there too.

Thanks... we're demoing up a bunch of material trying to pick out what works best for an album of cover tunes. My harp buddy is Blake Taylor, who has really made a name for himself in the midwest as a killer harmonica guy. He hangs with folks like Jason Ricci when they're in town, and even sat in with Spoon at their most recent Cincy gig. You can check out our myspace page for some of his work.

And now back to our regularly scheduled programing...

Mpa gold!

Well, even after building and using the SCA N72 (which is awesome)- the MPA gold stays in the rack. It's got it's own sound. Here's a clip MPA on vox, guitars and bass. Stock tubes. Chain is GT66>MPA Gold>Pro Vla>EMU 1820m>
Sonar 7. Love it for bass DI. I think on multiple tracks the preamp noise can add up quickly if you're not careful, though. N72>Pro Vla thumbsup up another notch on the quality ladder.Crossed My Mind.mp3

Ahhhh crap...I don't usually do this, but these guys won't mind. This is a pre-production push mix I just tracked for a band a week ago or so. Vocals are SM7>MPA (Telefunken)>Pro VLA (Mullard)>SSL converters. Bass is 80's P-Bass>MPA (Amperex)>Pro VLA (Mullard)>SSL's. Guitars and drums are a mix of Great River, RNP, API and 1073 clones.

It's a push mix guys...no processing whatsoever. Stuff's just placed where it should go and that's about it.

nice...a little softer edge to the acoustic...and the vocals are a little more prominent. Great track...even if it was recorded on a Panasonic Boombox.

Frank, that's killer! Superb example of what we're talking about here. Gotta say I dig the music too! The raw mix really works for them. If you don't mind, let me know after you mix it, I'd love to hear the finished product.

I've had new Sovtek 6922's out preform 60's Amperex New York PQ 6922's at about 10% of the price.

It's pretty easy to find new tubes that sound and perform as good or better than the old tubes and are a lot more affordable.
JJ Tesla, Electro Harmonix, and Mullard to name a few.

I've tried both many times and the JJ tesla's perform just as good or better than overpriced NOS tubes.

I agree with the OP Welcome to TubeDepot.com! is great, and you don't have to worry about getting ripped off by "hign-end" old tube jockies.

Could the new BLA pre be the next champion of the low end pres? $325

The MPA could be in trouble.

This song was tracked entirely with a stock ART Pro Channel and I mean everything: bass, piano, vocals, kick, snare, cymbals and all percussion instruments.

(I removed the link, limited time offer sorry.)

I recorded this quite a long time ago
but it just goes to show...

Cheers,

bcg

No offense intended but it doesn't seem center enough to be a good demo about using an Art Product.

With respect, what I mean is center = norm

Norm being a full band. Your clip seemed a bit more on the ambient side.

This is a full band. The band's name is The Musical Instrument Digital Interfaces. There are sixteen members in all!

What mic did you use on the vocals? Also, what interface/converters did you use?

Yeah but what about the Black Sable tubes. Do yours compare to that issue?

"Black Sable" is just a name they give their cryogenicly treated tubes. I have not bothered with them but here's the general concensus which you will find around the net:
"This has been discussed multiple times in multiple forums. Usually, the discussion dies down quickly when someone with materials engineering experience provides some science. Bottom line is that cryogenic treatment will provide no benefit to the materials used in tubes... -Rich"
Taken from Granger Amp forums.

Wow this is absolutely stunning. I love the sound of this. I just wish I had a firewire card because it makes me wanna try out the ST79 I won on ebay months ago but haven't really been able to since my other laptop died and my new one doesn't have a port for my saffire pro 10 i.o yet.

I'm wondering if I should rethink buying an ART MPA now cuz this sounds nothing short of spectacular and that's with essentially the same mic as me.

Don't know if I can sing as well as the OP but nonetheless I'll go down trying.
