My first pick would be ANDY SNEAP...He is an incredible producer. For evidence..pick up Nevermore "Dead Heart In A Dead World". That album has the greatest sound i've heard on a heavy cd yet.

1st place as most "underrated producer" of all time I think should be - Jimmy Page of Led Zeppelin.. IMHO for such a legendary act, here is very little 'producer awareness' by fans of this great band.

In 2nd place as most "underrated producer" of all time - could be Jimmy Miller, with the Rolling Stones, indevidually & jointly, grabbing all headlines, 'zeitgeist', and any other 'best in the world' accolades going, there remained little known about him.

Jimmy Miller: AND he's the drummer on 'You Can't Always Get What You Want' doing a pretty good job of nailing Charlie's style.

Whoever it was that produced Born to Run..By Bruce Springsteen did an amazing job. Ditto to Exile on Mainstreet by the stones. Gritty and raw but clear and spontanious at the same time.

three producers - bruce, his old manager Mike Appel, and his new manager, ex-rock critic Jon Landau.

two main engineers - louis lahav and... that's right... Jimmy Iovine!

Definitly the Glimmer Twins (Jagger/Richards). I also love 'Exile'.
How about Vanda and Young? I love that super tight, dry sound they had 'round 76/77.
And Malcolm McLaren.

Cheers, Julian

BTW, small question: who produced 'Rumours' by Fleetwood Mac. I love that production. Specially the drums...Mick Fleetwood is really my kind of drummer.

don galluci isn't my favorite producer or anything...however he did give my favorite album of all time, funhouse by the stooges, an incredible sound. i think he made that album incredibly powerful and live sounding. having iggy sing through a PA and micing the PA was a pretty genius thing to think for 1970.

also, how about kevin shields? loveless had a HUGE impact on 90's alternative rock, and it's a bloody great sounding album. another very experimental guy.

nigel godrich's work on ok computer still astounds me. the record just plain shimmers with beauty.

heres sort of an odd one, not sure you can call him a producer...more of a recorder: alan lomax. i listen to his field recording all the time and just marvel at the emotion he captured on wax. i'm not mentioning him for his technical prowess, andy wallace he was not...but that doesn't matter. he recorded some incredible musicians as well as preserved an important part of american roots music.

Trevor Horn is hardly underrated. I'd say he was one of the most respected and praised producers around, especially around this forum :-)

I honestly think that Tägtren is one of the most overrated producers in the metal business... I´d have to say:

-Anssi Kippo (Children of Bodom)
-Janne Saksa (Total Devastations latest kicks ass)
-And whoever produced Tori Amos´s "Strange Little Girls"! I´m not one for covers but damn... after hearing her version of Raining Blood...
-Leif Edling of Candlemass

I ran into to a friend of Lou Giourdano's about 1 year and a half ago. We were talking about Producers and I had mentioned that he was one of my faves. He gave his number and said that he's always looking to record up and coming bands. His fee is really reasonable too. Said he still love doing it.

BTW that Sunny Day Realestate record that he did (the rising tide) is sonically immaculate.

I would DISAGREE with your hatred of tagtren... DUDE he produced IMMORTAL's last two albums which were sonically BRILLIANT if i do say so myself..And his work with DIMMU was great as well...Strangely i find that his work with his own band HYPOCRISY he usually leaves a bit to be desired...however his solo band called PAIN has very good sound. Overall i think he is a very good and sometime GREAT producer/ engineer. just my 2 cents!

Hatred???? Dude.... C´mon. I just find his work bland.

How about Mags from Academy Studio, UK? I think he did the Peaceville BigThree early on. And his later work with MyDyingBride just rocks!

Good calls Jules.

I love that Page had such a strong vision from writing all the way through mastering.

Jimmy Miller had a very special way of getting very special takes.

I love them both.

I believe that "You Can't Allways get What You Want" is the most perfectly produced rock song EVER!

i've been thinking this over and i've come up with another one. MARTIN HANNETT. his work joy division and all of those other great factory records bands was amazing. unknown pleasures and the transmission single are some of the most gorgeously produced pieces of music i've ever had the pleasure of hearing.

...yeah, pretty badass when you consider there's a choir AND backup singers and everything else in there. Most people woulda made that sound cheesy for sure.
