Drum overheads...

Hi all,

I am picking so overheads for my studio and I can't decied what mics I should get. All of the oh mics that I have used and liked, I can't afford.

I have about $300 to spend on the pair. Hear are the mics that I am thinking about: Sp C4, mk012, nt5. I have also been thinking about getting LDCs insted. like a Spb1. I have used the c1000 but I hate them....

Thanks,

Reed

FormulaReed, we've tested loads of mics on OH's, including every SDC mic on the market. Out of your choices listed I'd recommend the Oktava's first and the C4's second. But another thing we've found is that with less expensive SDC's compared to LDC's on OH's is that you can get better results with LDC's. Some very good ones in or near your price range are Red5 Audio RV8, Studio Projects B1, Oktava MK319. I'd recommend any of those LDC's over any SDC mics that are under $500/pair for OH's.

You could get a pair of Kel Audio SDCs. It you end up not liking them, you can send them back and get a refund. Quite a reasonable policy...

Audio Technica Pro37R is a great SDC. I've used them for OH many times. And they're my favorite acoustic guitar mics too.

I have been using sm-81's recently on drum overheads and have fallen in love with them. They are over twice what you are looking to spend, but VERY usefull. I have used them from everything from drum OH's and acoustic guitar, to clapping and tambourine.

This is good; since we've covered the 'which mic pre' thread ad nauseum anyway.

I really don't know that much about O/H options, so maybe while you're posting your fave O/H mic, you could include a blurb on specifics of use; compress or not, positioning...etc...

Maybe this could be the definitive low end to low-mid end O/H mic thread!

I would have to say 300 is not quite enough. I've used the sm 81 and love them. I tried the nt5's once and hated their sound. i've seen sm 81's on ebay for 200 a piece before so i would try to find a use pair of those

If you get the oktavas then you could always upgrade them with the Joly mods later! And you could get extra capsules to extend the possibilities (omnis for close acousitc guitar, hypercardioid for toms?).

I didn't notice the date either until I saw the Oktavas in the same pargraph as <300 per pair. Them were the days

+1 on the MK-012s. Just finished up my bands EP and used them for OH and acoustic guitar. Sound fantastic.
