| Gear addict | DIY Broadband Absorbers (w/ 703) I am about to buy some O.C. 703. First off, I was wondering how thick I should buy (I was thinking 2 inches). Also, do you guys know of any DIY plans for 703 absorbers? Thanks in advance as always. - Bill

| I've seen an absorber built from a "stack" of 1" of 701 facing into the room, with 2 pieces of 1" 703 behind that with another two pieces of 1" 705 at the rear. It's supposed to be better for broad band absorption. Bri |

| I've built about 8 traps for my studio. The traps are 4 inches thick composed of 703 w/ FRK siding (2 x 2'' pieces sandwiched together). The FRK siding (looks like foil on one side) is supposed to have better absorption properties, but I haven't actually done any comparison tests between the normal 703 and FRK faced 703. I covered the two pieces in maroon burlap then "framed" them with stained wood planks. They look pretty sharp and cost me about $35 each. Placing the traps in the corners of my uninspiring rectangular (cringe) control room made a noticeable difference. Remember, all corners count: wall meets wall, wall meets ceiling, wall meets floor. I did some A/B sine sweep tests in the room both before absorption and after absorption. My sine sweep was played at about 85 db and captured by a fairly neutral omni mic, and only swept frequencies from 20hz - 500hz (seemed to be the biggest problem in my room). The traps did a great job of evening out the frequencies from around 150hz to 500hz, but did little to nothing below 150hz. I really just wish I had a bigger control room! Hope this helps! |

| I built 25 or 30 for my studio, out of 2 layers of 2" rockwool. But you can still use the same construction: http://www.pmerecords.com/broadband.cfm -Craig |

| If you don't want to mess with fabric coverings, you can buy a version of 703 that is faced with a black "skin". It's Owens Corning "Select Sound". http://www.geocities.com/thatwascasey I made 16 of those. One layer of regular 2" 703 plus a top layer of 2" Select Sound. Framed with MDF. Placed at all corner juctions and first reflection poins, they absorb down to about 60 Hz. |

| How much more is the "Select Sound" compared to normal 703?
