This is done with cheap chinese ribbon mics on guitars, SM7 on vocals, SVT-4 out to a China 1073 clone indo Echo Audiofire 12 @ 96K.
I don't remember what mics we used on drums but probably was a 57 on snare, 604 on toms, ATM25 on kick and MXL V67 on overheads.
All mixed ITB...
I'm a live musician, gigging with my band and solo. I've recorded for five years now.
Old drums (I'll receive them in a week, can't remeber details/name)
E-drums (cheapos from Thomann, Millenium MPS-400) + Steven Slate Drums & Superior Drummer 2
Taylor acoustic guitar
Fender Stratocaster from 1979
Vox AC30 reissue from 2001
2x GAP pre-73
GAP tube active ribbon mic
Some plugs, mainly Nebula + freebies
I just moved to a new location so I'm building the recording space, mixing room (my bedroom...) is almost ready.
This is from my previous location, my friends' rockabilly band. It's actually a rehearsal before christmas and the boys are a bit drunk but it has a good groove...

The instant I started listening to this, my kids ran over and started dancing around the room. SCORE!!

By no means a final mix, was just something to send the rest of my band to show that i've been working on it, most of the producer side is finished (apart from some backing vocals i wanna add), it's just a matter of mixing it properly now.
Gear used:
Recorded the band live in a rehearsal room, m-audio profire 2626 which took the duty of the guitar mic's and bass DI. Used my focusrite octopre mkII dynamic (run into the profire via ADAT) as the pre for the drum mic's and bass mic.
Mics for this part were as follows:
Overheads: 2 stock fatheads as a spaced pair
Kick: beta52 a couple of inches into the front hole
Snare: sm57
Toms: sm57 on rack tom and floor tom 1, md421 on floor tom 2
Bass: sm7b
Guitar's: e906 straight over the middle of the speaker on each amp
Bass DI: Just used the DI output on the bassist's Mark Bass head
I then took that session home and overdubbed 2 more guitar parts going straight into an apogee duet and using softube vintage amp room. The vocal's were overdubbed with an sm7b going into the duet set flat on the back of it.
The mix so far was just using sonimus satson on a bunch of channels, as well as the free sonEQ on snare, a couple of instances of softube trident and waves ssl comp on the bus. Also used a couple of stock logic verb's and delays and the kick drum was all attack and hardly any bottom (partly because of the room, partly because of the placement) so i mixed it with a kick sample from my BFD2 collection to get a little more bottom end, i also used BFD2 to replace one of the floor toms (the one i had a 57 on) because it was just very boomy and flappy sounding, and no EQ was really helping. I also ran the bass guitar through softube bass amp room.
So far i've been focusing more on the composition of it and overall sound, so i've just been using headphones on the go. Will be using edirol ma15's later this week though (probably the weakest part of the chain, but i will upgrade when i have a permanent room to mix in, because i wanna hit the room acoustics first).
So after all that, here it is...i ran it through PSP Xenon to get it upto volume. Oh yeh, all mixed with logic 9.1 on a 2010 MacBook Pro 13".

studio cut, DONT TRIP THE FUNK by Chickenhawkbirdgetters.
the gear as I can remember it:
Kick - e602 and beyerdynamic m160 further back
Snare - 57's (2 snares in the setup, only 1 on this song though... maybe?)
Toms - Audix i5's
Overheads - I think they were Mojave Audio 100's, so maybe not quite low end. Plus 1 mono beyerdynamic m130 (was copying the Ferla drum setup)
.... no hihat mic. HA!
Bass - Radial D2 DI
Conga's - md421's
Bongos - NT2a
Vocals - MA-200 (overdubbed)
Tbone - MA-200 for the clean sound, SM7b for the effects sound (running through some kind of BOSS processor that was his)
Keys - Nord Electro 2 DI through the same radial D2, overdubbed after the initial tracking.
DJ stuff was a stereo track given to me later by the DJ in the band.
Preamps were Mackie Onyx 800r's, True P-Solos, an SSL Alpha channel and the BLA Digi 002 preamps.
Live track: a cover of D'angelo, obviously. I used to track almost all of my band's live shows, just bring my HD24 and plug it into the bands Mackie 1604. As far as gear goes.... Well the live rig back then was usually this:
Vocals - SM58's
Guitar - 57 or maybe e609
Snare - i5
Kick - e602
Keys - either DI or 57, cannot remember
Bass - DI from amp head
Overheads if I remember correctly were the live sm58 (!!!) that was sitting in front of the drums for our female lead singer, who lays out on this song (along with us horns). I thought it was an awesome performance, and that comes across even with the limitations to the tracking.
Studio cut was mixed from my BLA Digi 022 through an A&H Zed14, the live one through a Mackie Onyx board.
Protools9
Phonic firefly 808U
behringer adat8000
AKG1000s
SM57s & 8s
9" speaker for low kick
T.bone for kick beater
Not sure what over heads were used, they were not mine.
This is the first full length song that I have recorded and mixed and (almost) finished.
There are loads of things about it that really annoy me, but Im not sure if they are actually annoying or just because I have listened to it a million times. And im not sure what it is about certain things that annoy me, or how to fix them. Its not been mastered in any way, just mixed.
So any comments about anything, how well its recorded, how well its mixed, how interesting or not the song is, what could be improved, what could be tweaked, what sounded good, what sounded crap, what annoyed you about the mix/song etc etc will be very welcome
Only 3 tracks... These are all originals of mine, but this was pretty much a practice so they aren't the best takes. All live too, no comps.
I used a mono AT2020 as an overhead directly above the kick, exactly halfway between cymabls.
A 58 on snare exactly in between snare and hat about 6 inches away...
another 58 on an ampeg 4X12 Bass cab thru a Fender Jazz Bass
A 57 on a Fender Hot Rod Deluxe thru a 67 Gibson ES125 w/ Lindy Fralin noise cancelling pickups.
It all went thru a Focusrite Saffire Pro 40 into Logic 8 24 bit, no pres unfortunately....
THats it! only 4 tracks total. Any tips would be awesome!!!!! I had to borrow the 57 and other 58. I only own an AT2020 and a 58. Have no cash. How could I set this up to sound better??
Edit: Btw Todd, You have a huge amount a gear and most of it is really nice, bordering on hi-fi hahah.... jk.. but seriously, do you know how the RNC is,I might get one....
Both the songs I have on my youtube link in my signature were recorded with cheap gear. One was done on adat tape machinces into a a and h mix wiz I modded then but to a computer with a berhinger usb to rca interface I used a gls es 58 on vocals the paino, guitar, and bass I DI them with an art mp I modded and the drums I recorded with cheap condensers aphex smds. The other I just recorded with a webcam with an art mp and a AT 3035. I just played and acoustic and sang on that one.
I also have an isolated vocal booth..
Ive been doing work on the room acoustic-wise but im happy with my home setup..i mostly mix in a professional studio in NYC but track a lot at my house..hey it got me a song on rotation on big radio station!
Bought the Moog Little Phatty & Korg Ms2000b off Ebay , got the yamaha VSS-200 (behind Mac pro) from a car boot sale for £5 , also got a Yamaha VSS-30 (not pictured) for £3 off another car boot sale , great little 8bit samplers lol.

I just bought the Steven Slate VCC and can't wait to test it out, but haven't installed it yet.
It may not look like it's low budget but I singled handedly built this studio by myself. It used to be an old storage room in my basement and I saved up my money to do some renovations. I am 22 years old and my entire life I aspired to be a music producer and engineer. I started out with a mbox2 and a sm57. Over the years I put my money into the equipment I have now. I'm dont have a high budget, and it took me since my younger teens to acquire all the equipment that i have now... so I don't want anybody to think im trying to show them up. I only wanted to show what years of hard work, determination, and chasing dreams can do even for the small pocket producers. MORE PICS... Hi everybody! My first post here...
I've made a record that you can listen to on "spotify" with my low end gear.
I work with Sonar X1 as my main DAW, even did the mastering with it.
Other stuff: Röde NT2, superior drummer with my digital drums, guitarrig, NI B4, True piano, fabfilter plugins.
