Mixed very well. Dynamics are great but I'm missing the transients big-time. Not enough snap and pop from the guitars or the drums. Sounds like either cheap preamps or converters or both. If you got that straightened out you're really be in business.
I'd love to hear an LDC in front of that guitar to catch the growl in the low end and low mids but you'd have phase issues out the wazoo if you didn't set it up right.
Ok, here comes the sax now. Yuck. Doesn't sit in the mix well at all. Lots of masking. Surely it was the mic position. You say there were people passing by, maybe you could put a boom behind him and bring the mic in from over his head?

All-in-all I really like it. The room (or outdoor walls as it may be) sounds awesome too and you capitalized on that in a good way.

hey bowie. how are you?

hey, tnx for your "feedback", ur one of the 1st ones who point issues i even dont understand, so i got a couple of questions for you.

what i get is that i should put some more beat into it. guitar or tombac. let me try that. still i recorded it with the fireface400 and octamic2. so preamps are cool, so the issue is to mixing.

what is LDC? i recorded it XY but a little more to the body of the guitar. i like it cause it gives more ruffer sound.

what is whazzoo for you?

with the sax ur very right. i can automate it better but a boom would have done it. lukely i had a great mic to record it.

for the room i put some naiants omni xy on top of the percusionplayers head from behind, and it saved my ass.

if you got more info about these issues im very eager. i need some touchy feedback. most ppl gave me great feedback but dont really touch my restrictions here.

tnx a lot greetz zebraaa

Zebraaa, you did a great job, I hope I didn't sound harsh, I just want to help by pointing out things that you might benefit from. I've done a lot of location recording like that and I know how hard it is to get a good sound when you're working around someone else's schedule. You recorded a great sound.

I'm not sure what the otomic2 is but the fireface dopes not have good preamps. You should have better preamps to go along with those nice mics. When you get better preamps, you will notice more detail and a lot more of the snap, pluck, pop, and other percussive sounds from the instruments. The high and low frequencies will also improve too. You have good mics and some skill so you deserve better preamps.

An "LDC" is a large-diaphragm condenser mic. They are often called vocal mics. If you had one in front of the guitar, it would capture some of the growl but you would have to set it up at the right distance so that it would not phase with the KM184's (which already sound very good). To avoid phasing, you have to do a lot of listening and moving of the mic. Adding an LDC is not critical, but if you have an extra mic, try it and you could always leave it out of the mix if it doesn't work.

How big was that room? It sounds so great. The guitar player is awesome too. What kind of guitar was he playing?

he told me he bought it in a small town in Italy. bought it in 1980 and payed 500€ for it. on the concert he also played a libenan guitar called sas. and also a baliset from iran. that one is tough to mix.

the room was in a very old house in antwerp. and where the band was playing were big black proffesional cloths. (that saved me too)

check the song "so unkind".
i also recorded guitar with the ribbon aeaR92 close to it ( with the phase button on.) its not done properly yet, mixed it with ssl plugs and they suck (makes it very cold). im trying now URS and they are a lot warmer.

i was thinking getting the daking 4preamp. but it cost me and i dont have money yet. have you got any other preamps in mind? they are probely not cheap.

tnx for letting me know u like the job i did, i just hope i get it right. its like a presentation of myself. i love recording music but also the time and the air. the atmosfere wich is there is even more important for me then just the music. have u got a website so i can listen to your recorded music?

Hi Peter, there's a lot of preamps to choose from. Maybe you could get 2 chan of colord pre and 2 clean. This would seem to fit the kind of music you're recording. What country are you in?

I remember hearing "So Unkind" a few days ago and I loved that one too. The room wasn't as nice sounding as this one though.

I'm pretty stupid when it comes to internet stuff so none of my recordings are online yet. Some of my clients have recordings I've done for them online but I don't know the links. EDIT: I google searched and found one but the guy that mixed it butchered it so I'm too embarassed to post the link! I do have a lot of my own music that I need to put out there, I just have to find someone who help me set up a website.

i live in belgium, my favorite goes to all acoustic, jazz/clasical folk/blues
just put it on soundclick lol, make sure u make 192khz mp3's, they are for an mp3 quiet good for audio. if you go lower the quality is crap. im interested in your idea of recording and mixing. most of the time i always check ppls websites or music who feedback.
well soon i put some more mixes from this concert, hope u enjoy them.

let me know if you got something on the web. greetzzzzzz
