Need help with picking new mic asap

Hey guys, well I have asked questions before about my mic U87ai, but I need to get it repaired, it keeps cutting in and out when tracking.

I have an Avalon 737sp Preamp, but unfortunitaly dont have $$$ to spend.

I am looking in the price range up to $500 for a mic for the studio. I am in the middle of a project and need one asap, rock/alternative/industrial style, so looking for something I can go out and get. Any recommendations anyone?!??!

Thanks
CISUM

I've never used a Neumann but I really like the sound of the AT 4033 and At 4047 mics. The 4033 is brighter sounding and the 4047 is warm with tamed highs. Also, I hear the M-Audio Sputnik sounds really nice. All three are in your price range. Good luck.

Shure SM7b? Great for lower-fi rock.

+1, very nice mic though I think a used 414buls off ebay (usually under 500) would be very versatile. If you like the 87, then maybe an NT1000?...

Vocal Mic

A Mike Joly Modded Otava 319 is warm, smooth and oh so buttery...and you can pick one up for about $400.

Another vote for the Shure SM7B. The Heil PR30 and PR40 are great mics for the money as well.

I gotta say, in the $500-ish range I keep finding the Oktava MK-105 to be a great combination of rich sound, air, but "forgiveness" in that it just seems to sound good on voice, acoustic sources, room mic...you name it.

That mic slays in that price range.

Hey War, what do think of Blue Dragonflys as overheads and what do you think of it all around?

If you want more of that German mic sound on a budget pick up either a Sterling Audio ST77 or an Audio-Technica AT4047. Both are fantastic mics and in your price range. Another mic that seems pretty cool is the new KEL HM7U and it is $300 with shipping in the states.

I love my ST79, multi pattern version and it holds up with the big dogs. It's not a toy. I've used the AT4047 and I'd love to pick one up just too many things going on for me to spend money on the fun stuff now.

Just some food for thought.

Now if you want a nice, yet different sounding mic try an AT4033, KSM32, maybe a Bluebird, etc. AKG C414 used may be around $500. The SM7 is really cool but it's an entirely different sound and type of mic so something like that could be cool in your mic collection as well. There's also the HEIL PR40, and E/V RE-20.

Again just some thoughts.
