Which Pinch Harmonics Pickups ?

good day wherever you are!

i need to replace some pickups for an upcoming recording session.
the thing is, i like pinch harmonics, and i want the pickup(s) i choose
to boost them frequencies so they are loud and good.
i love emg81's i know...
but besides them, what seymour duncan or dimarzio models are
good for this purpose of squealing and whatnot?
the guitar(s) are all mahogany set-neck models.
ok, so you know there's gonna be some pinching going down with the thumb.
the style of music is progressive metal.
can anyone suggest what's worked good for them?

thanks!

seymour duncan invader, w/ the big allen bolts for pole pieces.

seymour duncan parralel axis trembuckers, I use those in all my guitars, dont think they make them anymore check the 'bay.

The dimarzio PAF wannabes are pretty kick ass too (freds?)

Seymour Duncan has tone charts for their pickups. A pickup with lots of midrange would enhance pick harmonics though it might not be the best all arounder for heavy music.

Duncan JB's are nice and they don't paint you into a power tool corner

I agree with Don, though higher output pickups will definitely help you. EMG's, as you already know, are great for harmonics, as well as the higher output Dimarzio's, such as the Evolution, the Steve's Special, the X2N, etc. I'm also a big fan of the Duncan Full Shred. It sounds GREAT on metal stuff, with the Duncan Jazz pickup in the neck.

Evolutions bro. EMG 81s are cool too. You could go 85 neck and 81 bridge aka Zakk Wylde set (EMG ZW set). I have it and love it. Do you have single coils or humbuckers? What kind of music are you doing? What kind of "sound" are u going for?

While I really have nothing useful to contribute to this thread, I have to comment that I find it completely amusing that any discussion on pinch harmonics eventually HAS to mention Zakk Wylde's name somewhere...
On top of that my useless contribution is that as a pretty obsessed metal guitarist I've always found that the pinch harmonics' tone seem to be more in the way I play them, the strings (both type and amount of wear), and the sustain of the guitar itself.

Which Pinch Harmonic Pickups?

i'm completely aware that technique supersedes technology...
haha, but there is definitely a reason why Zakk Wylde chooses EMGs!
and not soapbars... LOL
anyway, the style/vein i'm trying to achieve in this session is
along the lines of As i Lay Dying, In Flames, Killswitch Engage.
i could pull it all off with EMGs or even the stock P/Us, but i wanted
some suggestions of passive pickups that have outrageous harmonic response.
i can get great harmonics from the stock pickups in this PRS but, owning an
ESP with EMGs, i know that pickups do make a difference in the way they respond to high gain situations.
i think i've got enough good suggestions to get a good pickup.
now then... WHICH ONE?!
haha.

Hot output and lots of mids/treble. Even I can pinch a...harmonic with one.

Rather than change PUs, I would use a pedal that boosts the desired frequency, maybe something like a MXR Micro Amp or a Z.Vex Super Hard-On (surely suited for metal! ) . And brand new strings for sure.
I got a feeling that something like a Sans Amp PSA-1 could also be good, because it really leads itself to 'brutal midrange' tones, in this case it might be a good idea.
I think this is one place where you DON'T want a nice, airy amp/room sound, so a modeler or SansAmp might be cool.

Choosing your pickups for best pinch harmonics is like choosing a car for the best parking brake. Maybe it's just me...
Robbie Robertson wore em out on a strat-
Billy Gibbons on whatever he was playin. I doubt it ever crossed their minds.

The comments on technique are true... you can "pinch" on an acoustic gtr if you've got the chop down. Pickups can sure help shape them sonicly though... just like they can shape "chunka chunka" power chord stuff. X2N was my personal fav for this kinda thang.... people do seem to dig the EMG's though.
