I got one of these free with my Presonus Firepod. I think I am going to sell it but I am not certain yet.

Anyway, I did a VERY short test of it on vocals and acoustic.

It seemed to be more natural than most cheap condensers. It was not scooped nor did it have a ton of high end sizzle (though it was prone to a fair amount of sibilance). However, it sounded extremely "grainy" and a little dirty in comparison with other microphones. It didnt really muddy up the low end or anything, but it just had a very grainy sound and feel to it.

All in all I think it would be usable for someone without a huge mic closet available to them, however, there are most definitely better choices as far as versatility is concerned. The "texture" is something you would have to like, but I am sure it could have its uses in a modest setup.

The mic seems to possess better sonics than everything else in its price bracket. It's got no proximity as there is a roll off of the low frequencies starting at 200 Hz. Most side-address condenser mics I encounter in this price bracket tend to end up being used for niche things such as handclaps, toms, hand percussion, guitar amps. I think the AT2020 more capable than that but YMMV.

There have been a few informative threads over at 3D Audio and here's one of them... http://www.3daudioinc.com/cgi-bin/ul...&f=26&t=000008

Ozraves - How would you compare the 2020 to the SP B1 or MXL V67?

The B1 sort of doesn't do much for the vast majority of vocalists or people recording dialog. It's sort of a punchy mic that I like for recording guitar amps and for certain percussion duties.

The AT2020 is more of a vocal mic. It also does a decent job on dialog. It's a bright mic but not as grating as some other cheap condensers.

I've never been a fan of the V67. I am a fan of the AT2020 and B1 so... You see where I'm heading.

I'd probably more go with the AT2020 if I were more interested in the singing and/or dialog.

I'd probably more go with the B1 if I wanted to record guitar amps.

I do think an SM57 or a 635a a better choice than any of the above for versatility. YMMV.

I agree with most of the other posts in that it is a great mic for $100, but obviously doesn't match up to more expensive mics. I think it definitely kicks the crap out of the rest of the sub-$100 class!

used them

I've used them on overheads and they're not bad at all, although I ended up using the sm81 cuz they sound better to me. but the sm81 is much more expensive. so I must say for the price the at2020 is great. and I have also used them on vocals and I like it.I prefer the At2020 over an Nt1000 for vocals.I've also been recommended to use the at2020 on acoustic guitars, but I never had the chance to try.but I'm sure they're great for acoustic guitars too.but on top of all that I also have a very well treated room.

I use two 2035's for drum overheads, think the only difference is a pad and lowcut filter? I don't have a vast mic locker, but they sound good to me.

I've use 2020's for vocals, ensemble vocals, piano, drum overheads, stereo pair for a string chamber group (really surprised me how well this worked). They can be a little fizzy on cymbals, a bit thin on electric guitar because of the built in high pass, but overall a very neutral mic, glad I own a pair.

Good mic for the price.
The 2035 is better.
Cheers!

A 2020 Love Thread from 5 years ago.

I've got a pair of 2020's, a pair of 4050's and a 2035 and a bunch of other AT mics. They're fine mics for the money. The 2020's can be a touch nasal and tizzy. But they are also full and warm. Most of these AT mics are the only LDC's that I'll ever take out on tours .. They're built for it.

I picked one up on EBay for a mere $105, basically only $25 more than what the 2020 usually goes for. Even if it's a cheaper mic, for some strange reason I like it better than my 4040 (the high end is smoother.) As someone wrote, "Audio Technica are their own worst enemy." So true!

The AT2035 is not exactly a brand new item, it's just a rebranded AT3035 made in China instead of Japan. I own three of the 3035's and I agree. astounding mic for the money. I use them on more sources than any other mic in the locker. I'd be curious to compare the build quality between the two, and to know if they're using the same capsule as the 30 series or not.

The first LDC I ever bought was a 3035 from ebay. It's still one of my favorites. I have other condensers, including 2 AT2020s, and the 3035 still gets the most varied use. I've used it for vocals, drum mic (8 ft in front of kit), acoustic guitar, guitar amp, percussion, voice overs. I'm pleased how lucky I was with that purchase. I'd love to know how the 2035 compares.

The 2020s are excellent as well. I've used them in the Glynn Johns set up in a pinch, and they did the job damn fine. I've used them on piano for a live show, and as stereo mics to record a Jr. Symphony concert. They are a great utility mic. Haven't used them on vocals or acoustic, don't know if I'd need/want to.

I bought a pair f these for my first overheads. I've not used them on a kit yet, but I grabbed them at around 55 each (brand new) with shipping, through eBay. I read many reviews and for that price, they should easily beat the competition.

Do a search on the forum, there are already threads about his mic, and GS user reviews.
