Non-ribbon P-Solo pre use with ribbon mic

I'm currently in the market for a ~$500 pre, and I am eyeing the True Systems P-Solo. I don't currently have a ribbon mic, but I might also pick up a Cascade Fat Head.

I don't like the Ribbon version of the P-Solo, because it doesn't have phantom power, so it's good for ribbons and ribbons only. Will the regular version of the P-Solo have enough gain to drive a Fat Head?

The other pre I'm considering is the Grace m101, which I know will take care of all my needs, but I'm not convinced that that Grace m101 will sound better than the P-Solo.

Any advice is appreciated, especially about the gain on the reg P-Solo used with a ribbon mic. thanks!

I just got my m101 2 months ago and it's great...I, like you was also stck between the two..but after useing the SEARCH function I found that the p-solo was not as good...and I am very happy with my decision...hope that helps!!

PS..you also have 70db of gain with the m101...just incase you get a sm7b one day....

Thanks for the input. That's a good point at about the SM7b because that definitely is on my future gear list.

Yeah, I've been searching and reading all morning long. A lot of signs kept pointing to the P-Solo, then I'd find even more pointing to the m101. I originally was set on the m101, but kept looking at the P-Solo out of curiosity. Maybe it was just that killer red color that was misleading me!

I herd (read) on a couple posts that the solo had issues with high's...like es's and stuff!! cant quite remember but I fell for the grace...plus one unimportant thnig is..I bought a rack shelf so I could mount the 101 in my rack...I have a tendency to knock things over a lot...so I feel safer with it in a rack...

The rackability thing was a factor for me too. I have a lot of extra rack shelves that I can put to use, and don't particularly like desktop units. As small as they try to be with their footprint, they still take up space and add to desk clutter. Gear should be in a rack where it belongs.

You will not regret the 101..Im sure it has a good re-sell value to..but I would never part with mine!!!!
