AKG C4000B vs Rode NTK

I've picked up the NTK and am not impressed @ all...I've heard the AKG C4000B is a really nice mic in this price range. Will I be happier with the C400B? I'm mainly tracking hip hop vocals, male and female w/ some r&b type ish.

Why don't you like the NTK?

If you are doing vocals try to avoid mic'ing directly into the capsule. I personally think the NTK sounds good for a lot of applications, including vocals.

It's not the best microphone obviously..but considering the price point it's very good IMHO.

BTW - I have heard it's not very good on female vocals, which might be why you don't like it.

I guess some of the highs sound a bit harsh, I was expecting a loving warmth from this mic but have yet to hear it. That was mic'ing directly into the capsule tho. Maybe I'll try some other mic'ing positions. It sounded super nice on a lower gritty voiced emcee, but on the others...

dunno the NTK - BUT the C4000 is definitely harsh sounding, man. I have a pair - I use them as a second choice - meaning, when I run out of mics.. NEVER got them right for overheads. Only on accordion or upright bass - because for the moment I don't have another LDD for that.
For the price, C4000 are good enough, but maybe you should save more money and get somethin' in the upper league - Soundelux coes to mind - or even Groove Tubes.
Or Shure SM7b - if you're into rock vocals, or Electrovoice RE 20 if you want it for kik or floor toms also, or barss instruments.

I've have never had a problem with my c4000. I main record rap and R&B. It sound pretty smooth on every R&B artist I've recorded. And pretty cool on 75% of Rap artists I've tracked. If you do buy it u better hurry, the price seems to be steadly going up for some strange reason. I paid $459 "new" for MF about 1.5 yrs ago, now the price is like $200 buck more. It also sounds nice on acous. GTR

here is a rough recording using the C4000b........ 96k mp3
