tl audio or mindprint or?

hi everybody, i am nucomer from france called chakal 900

i produce drum and bass, hip hop since 7 years using logic audio, uad1 card, old soundcraft 200, roland re 201, presonus blue comp, studio quad 4 digitech

i search something to boost and type soundz(kiks, snares, subz), equing and compressing, with a budget of 1800 dollars or 1500 euros
a sound engineer explain me that i needed opto compression for that style(dnb), so i began my quest and found some products:
tl audio 5052, mindprint dtc, toft audio designs atc2.

what do u think about these or others
please, remenber i m french and my american is not really the best

thankz all for brainstorming

Welcome on the board!

A cheap opto would be the Art Pro VLA.
Of the units you list, the Toft ATC-2 is probably the most interesting, the best EQ. Dunno about the compressors, usable probably as well, and a different style then the Art Pro VLA.

Get both and throw in an RNC, for even another compressor style :-)
Should fit within' your budget and offer you rather some tastes!

fat

for hiphop those machines are rather clean IMHO
go for an old Urei if you can find one, I have a 7110, and it really adds a rudeness to the sound. If you can find one, they are mostly very cheap. Or an old dbx machine (not the 266xl, I have it and it is crap..but an old 160 or something) Eq could be a Ivory TL audio. Not very clean as well but lots of body. Or a tube SPL, second hand..
and get a nice mic preamp, to make the voice track sit in front (with some nice distortion..)
there are lots of machines for hiphop that make the thing fat. In my experience, hiphop from the USA is produced more clean..just my opinion of course..
Try to listen to the machine before you buy it!

the most important for me now is to work to have fat kiks and subz but really controlledto make bad ass drum and bass trakz
its why i search an eq and a compressor to tweak my drumkits and basses
i try to not compress the rest(keys, stabs, padz)
its really to boost the low of the track, but i have to ssay i enjoy hard but clean sounds, maybe you wil have ideas for me

does someone has tried the nu reverb and the fairchild of the uad1?

no I mean the channel one (or the track one) or the charisma.........dûh
the kultube is a nice piece too ;-)

I get the impression SPL is not a favourite of a lot of producers. As the machines are ok, I wonder why...........
could this be a cultural difference?

a track one or simular channelstrip, RNC, and a LA4a (with a bit of luck) would fit 1500 euros...
now that would be a nice setup.

again just IMHO>>

I for one ~ really enjoy the SPL line. And the Mindprint tube DTC dual channel @ 'round $800+ used, is also a decent sounding unit.

the toft atc-2 compressor and eq sound -very- nice. versatile too. they also make a standalone dual-channel compressor called the dc-2 for $599. it's the same one used in the atc-2 which is based on the trident cb-9146.

if you need an opto, check out the new joemeek twinQ. it's less money too...

good luck

yes it is, it is a nice warm compression, very different from other units. I like it, but not on everything. But you have the UAD card, so you have more options. I have a Joemeek VC6, and used the preamp on it a lot for hiphop vocals, connect a cheap dynamic mic and just turn up the amp until it just distorts add a little compression: instant dirty vocals. Very different from distortion from a software based instrument.
hope this helps...
good luck making the choice.
