Looking for a cheap monitor controller...

Basicly I'm looking for a glorified volume knob to sit between my DAC and my powered monitors.
Don't need anything fancy with talkback or monitor selectors, just something to control the volume.

A seperate out that is not controled by the volume control would be nice, but not needed, for meters and it has to sound good, of course.

I looked at the Presonus Central Station, but I don't need all those features and don't want to spend that much.

Anybody got some recommendations for me?

This is prolly one of the cheapest you can get. Dunno if it doesn't affect the sound, but it's passive, so it could be allright... Worth to check maybe.

bad switch

of course I want the best for no cash
so I got the abovementioned m-patch
put it in the rack and connected it
and

HORROR
the thing makes loud plop noises when switching in or outputs!
under load and without
this must be the fastest way to kill your monitors.

oh and the attenuators are crap too. It sounds like a 6db lowpass.

so nice try, no sigar

the SPL unit looks nice (active alas, but, looooots of in outputs, and cuemix), but SPL make nice things, or make one myself
dunno yet..

Reptil, thanks for the reply about the M-Patch...I wouldn't exactly put the SPL in the low end catagory though...way beyond my budget and a lot more than a glorified volume knob....

yeah it is more, but if you record, and that's what I'm also doing, besides electronic music, and have a seperate booth, it is nice to have that flexibillity.
right now a mackie smeckie vlz is doing the job, but it is not entirely neutral. something I do expect from the spl. ok so its not passive, but try to make a cue mixer passive switcher and attenuator yourself, from class a components... it will be twice the cash.
so for me the spl is a compromise, but it will speed up the workflow considerably..
the coleman is also nice, but I need to import it here, which will cost me another 70 USD..

if you want a simple but good attenuator, just go for the
nhtpro pvc http://www.nhtpro.com/2004/products/...=1&ProductID=6

or the goldpoint http://www.goldpt.com/

or this one http://www.dact.com/

there's lots of threads about this on the forum.. I'll post my experiences with my next box..

I second that. I have one and it does the job and is very simple. I don't notice any change in signal.
