getting a starter equiped...

well.
this is the story..

a good friend of mine is starting to get himself in audio engineering.

he already bought some nice stuff.

he has a 002 (not the rack)

a g5

he has 1 compressor (dbx) a crap 4 channel tla preamp and some good mics...

now he has saved up some money and wants to buy some new stuff.

his budget is around 3000 euro tva in.

i proposed him to buy a decent convertor and start working thrue the opticals.

but i can understand him when he is saying that that means he has then only a convertor and he has to save up for another year to buy some preamps for that thing...

so i would prose him to buy a focusrite430 with the digital card.

that will give him a very good channelstrip with spdif.

with a DI,d-esser, compressor and eq...

the thing is of course that in this way i am letting him buy 1 very good machine instead of 10 "ok" machines...

would you guys give him other advice?!

thx

Well, much depends indeed on how many tracks he wants to record at once. I'll go out from one or 2 tracks and a rocksound.

2 tracks:
Maybe keep the 002 as convertor for a while and get 2 Daking Pre/EQ channels, these babies rock Will probably be just around that planned 3000euro

1 track:
Get one Daking Pre/EQ and spend the rest on convertors.

You can get the Dakings in Belgium from http://www.joystick.be , say hi to Raf from me (or PM me) and you prolly can borrow the demo unit to give it a try

NO!!!

he is to stupid for that (he is sitting next to me...)

daking stuff?!

yeah.

i know raf quite well as well!

it's a small country.

great guy. great gear.

i'll check with him!!!

i checked daking stuff once and it sounds amazing!!

certainly for that kind of music!!!

but the thing is (my opinion) something like the focusrite 430 is giving him everything all 1 one box.

a good analog box, splendid convertor...

opinions?!

In the end it's all a matter of taste, so it's best to let the guy decide for himself what he likes most.
With 3000euro to spend, he got the luxury to look into high end stuff rather then low end., so i guess a real bad buy is impossible. It's just what suits him and what not.

jop.

i can't say anything bad about that guy either.

did you guys bought your cranesong stuff as well trough him?!

it is amazing how he combines his brands...

to continue on the topic.

well. i also think that my friend has to find out himself what he likes and what he doesn't

but i know he is looking for 1 good channel that will work on bas, voice and guitar.

and on 1 channel for the drums (for example snare or BD)

that's why i proposed him to buy a channel strip with a digital option and a lot of excellent stuff on it.

and he can use it as a AD for the 002.

from there on he can continue.

any good channel strips for him that can do that for him?! bisedes the focusrite430!?

thx

check the SPL stuff, for less than 1000 euros they have an amazing channel strip , with optional digital option. Don't know if it is suited for rock music though..
there is one on ebay germany..

and, yes, joystick audio rocks, nice service.

e.

we are both no big fans of SPL. but it is an option!!!

he is quite convinced of buying a focusrite 430.

i don't think that is a bad thing.

it is an excellent strip that captures everything like it is.

perfect for a starter! imho.

ok, it is not coloured at all but within some time he can buy a decent convertor and all the coloured stuff in the world!

somedy who has a better idea than this?

thx
