Akai s2800

Hi there, I got a s2800 free when i purchased a s900 i know nothing about the s2800 i purhcased the s900 for that lo-fi feel I also have a casio sampler that i tend to use
would the s2800 have any features to it that might be of use to me for a gritty sound? or should i just use the s900 and sell the s2800 on to a good home?

the S2800 is a pretty cool sampler. its esentially a cut back S3000xl with a few features missing. most importantly is the lack of SCSI which can make importing and backing up programs and multis a pain in the read end.

the effects card is pretty cool to, no where near a lexicon or a TC when it comes to quality, but hey, if your using it for lo-fi sounds it aint really going to matter too much!

im pretty sure you can import S950 programs straight in, but from memory you will have to re-map the samples to the right keygroups.

and if nothing else, it makes a pretty cool modular synth, as the routing you can do internally is pretty awesome

hope that helps you out! ohh PS, ive had a heap of trouble trying to find an english version of the manual, so i just use the S3000xl manual, almost everything is done the same.

do you mean as in like a micro modular from nord? I always wanted something like that, I have only really used samplers for loops and say making a melody out of samples.

So could I say import a sine wave and use the various parts of the internal synth engine and use it as a synth then?

I take it the sampler on my MPC would not have that feature? sounds pretty cool

I have the the 'studio' version of the S2800 which I think is the same except it came with 8 megs RAM, SCSI, and digital i/o.

It's a pretty cool sampler - it's a main staple in my studio along with an Ensoniq SD1. I almost never use it for loops as I don't really use loops in my production. It has great punchiness for drums, which is what I mainly use it for.

As for the modular synthesizer thing, yes, it does this very well. It actually boots up with sine, square, pulse, triangle and sawtooth waves if I'm not mistaken. I have made many a moog-ish synth sound on that thing. More so though, I sample weird sounds and use the s2800 to turn them into instruments.

If you don't have a good general sampler, I'd keep the S2800. If you already have a good general sampler, then sell it.

LOL well I have a MV8000 sampler, its kinda like a MPC but roland, it has one osc only the fx are nice on it has filters etc but I have a feeling I will be able to get what I am wanting from the akai better than the roland (correct me if im wrong) I am wanting it to be a synth but with a difference I kind of miss the micro modular as that had the best sound of synth I have ever ever heard and i was wanting to use the akai instead.

I think i will give it a try and see how I go my mv only has one osc in it, does the akai have everything a normal synth say a ms2000r or a supernova has? and can you say put osc one to be sine and osc 2 to be square etc.

i have a keyboard controller (fatar) would I be able to program that to manipulate the filters by knob twiddling rather than menus in the akai?

thanks
