kick mic

Used allsorts

I like a 421 alot
I like a 57 too sometimes. Needs something else usually tho.
I use a D112 alot too. Placement is important but isnt it always. (I like this mic on trombone a lot too!)
Used a d112 inside and an Oktava 319 outside the other day. It sounds great (dub recording)
apex 205 outside is pretty massive!

there you are

With the D6, it's too big outside the hole . It really wants to be in the kick drum.
Agree on the m88 just outside the hole -- perhaps, just peeking in ever so slightly.

-1 for Powerstroke heads and all the variations. I play with those since they came out (I think evans was the first to use the internal ring) and they're very easy to tune (too easy) but IMO every bass drum sounds the same with those heads. It's a big ''boom'' with no tones.

Any mic will do a correct job if well placed. I like the 421, the re20 and indeed the 47fet.

Wrong, REMO was the first to use internal ring, Evans copy them.

Really? I had an Evans EQ1 or 2 in 1990. I didn't know the powerstoke exists then.

Yes but you might have to boost the low end for a rock sound.

Oh absolutely, but it definitely captures the punch and click of the beater.

Still going for the SM91 inside and a D112 outside to start out.
There is something about the bite of a 91 that works for me. I have a D6, but i am in the "one trick pony" boat. When it works, it's right on. I have settled on RE20, and a 421, but it's more of a heavy EQ situation. Beta 52 is too much woof for me, but i tend to tune the drum on the low side.
If the drummer is heavy handed, but light on the foot, i'll build a tunnel, and add a 4047 about a foot and a half away... give the kick some fullness. Pad the tunnel heavily to keep out the cymbals...

I've always wanted to try the yamaha speaker/sub trick... looks cool too! What's the polarity hook up for that?
