Budget monitors

i need a decent set of budget monitors.. i'm using 20/20's right now but i just don't like how they sound and translate.
i want a budget of $750 but uner $500 is even better right now.

3 monitors under $500 that i've been look:
tapco S8
M-audio bx8
samson 80a
KrK RP8

what else are some decent ACTIVE budget monitors out there? i'm leaning toward the tapco's or maybe the bx8's..

Check out the NHT M-00 and the Truth Audio TA-1P

I'm getting both in for an evaluation in January or February.

How's this for budget?

£130 for the pair...

http://www.esi-pro.com/viewProduct.php?pid=24&page=2

Labs has a set, checked them out earlier this month, sound great for the money.

I've a pair on the way for my home setup.

Cheers,
Rich

Hmmm... decent and budget?

I know you want active, but active monitors for that kind of cash will be pretty compromised. I'd find the best pair of passive monitors I could get and a decent-ish amp (you can always upgrade the amp later).

If it was me, I'd get used pair of ProAc's. You can usually find them on Audiogon.com

The Studio 100's, Tablette's or Response One's will be superbly musical and informative monitors you'll own for years even if you end up with ATC's, PMC's, Genelec's etc alongside should you become rich and famous.

FWIW

Cheers,

bdp

I can tell u what NOT to get....

1- anything by FOSTEX ( my PM.05's blew immediatly after purchsase, now the L woofer distorts like crazy!)

2- M-Audio BX-5's (get the BX-8's cuz the "5's" have almost nothing below 75hz!...or get a SUB)

Re the Fostex gear. I've been using the PM-1's for about a year and they've been nothing but solid for me throughout that time. I've had the chance to demo at home various monitors and the Fostex had impressed me more than the m1 Actives (which are also good), the Truths (which are horrible IMHO), the BX5's (ok, a little weak in the bass), the new KRK v4's (not a peep on the old series), and the HR624's (nothing like the 824's my brother has in his main studio).

I'd recommend the PM1's (dunno about the smaller PM0.5's) and suggest that if you wanted next level, try the Tannoy reveals for unforgiving accuracy, or Emes Pinks for fantastic freqency response per size.

alesis monitor 1's i won't ever place in my studio. i'll keep the 20/20's over them
the fostex pm-1. i have a friend that has them to me the lowend is really boosted

as for an amp, i have a hafler p4000

i'm realkly liking the bx8 and tapco s8's right now

That's odd. My PM-1's are quite balanced running though a Layla24. Is it the room or placement that's giving your friend an extended response?

Praps plug up one front port. That's common practice with the Bass-heavy M1 Actives from what I've heard.

The TA-1P is passive and $700 a pair. The TA-1A are active and about $1300.

Well IMO you can't get better with such a money. Keep events and spare money for something more real.

i need something better right now. imo the tapco s8's and m-audio bx8's blow my passive 20/20's away.
both of them are so much easier to mix on. the acoustics in my room are good but 20/20's start to get a little muddy and when mixing artist sometimes ask me "why does it sound like that"

the bx8's i know personally translate better than 20/20's when i start mixing.

the tapco's i only heard, i've never done a mix with them
as for better monitors and keeping the 20/20's.. after income taxes i'm getting dynaudio arir20's or air15's... i just need something to hold me over until then

Don't think they've been mentioned, but don't forget to check out the KRK ST6's... very inexpensive indeed.

they're passive, and i like the sound of the rp's over the st's...

i guess i'll try to call my guys at atlanta pro audio and see if they have a pair of tapco s8's i can model.

I second, "February"?

Just wait man!

You will just be throwing away money.
Hell, I heard some 20/20's with a bryston one time at StudioTech and they sounded quite pleasant. I still bought the Gennies though.

Take that 500 and add it to the booty then and get something better then the "air" series. I am not sure I have ever heard anything good about those??? I sure didn't when I heard the small ones. forget the model but, me no like-y.

Good luck!

That is a great price!

If you like them AND you listened, you should get them.
I am sure they will work great for you.

Best of luck!

$700 pr.

I've had them for 3 months and I'm still amazed at how they sound and translate.

the v6's aren't bad but they have no low end at all.. like revels.
i run a hiphop/r&b studio.. i have songs that have really hard hitting kicks or 808's not to mention moog basslines, low tuned 808's that have long decays etc..

as for waiting til feb.05
these monitors will be a part of studio b. a studio i'm gonna let my cousin run and use for demo or lower budget projects.

i'll be in studio A with the dynaudio's,higher end mics, pres, compressors etc...

if it was a toss up between the tapco s8's and maudio bx8's or something else under $550 which would you get? we're gonna order the monitors from american musical supply this weekend

I would suggest the Yorkville YSM-1s. They'll run you under $250, and they sound great. They have been very well reviewed as good monitors in any price range.

If you already have the 20/20's your probably better off spending the $500 on acoustic treatment.

my acoustic treatments are great. i had some guys come through and do it. my guys over at atlanta pro audio(gary) made sure everything was good.
i have traps, a bunch of fiberglass and sonex in my area. it sounds great and is realy easy to mix in... i just can't stand the sound of 20/20's... right now i still have my friends hafler monitors setup and the past few sessions i ran all sound great. the mixes translated very well on the first try.. not the 3rd,4th 5th mix..

Yorkville

I'll second the comment on the Yorkville YSM1P, the powered ones. I have them in my B room - got them for 700$ a pair but I bet you can find a much better deal - I'm in Europe. These sound nice - NS10 with real bass, not that bumped on the upper mids, good details on highs but not as clear as NS10.They have some jumpers on the back to compensate on highs/lows for your specific room/placement. And they can be loud if you need that..
For the money, I think it can be a good choice.
