| Can you get a Single API? Cheapest? Do they make a stand alone API mic pre? I dont want to spend on a lunchbox and dont want to drop any cash on a 1U rack. Do they make a mini pre for a single mic XLR pre from API? Something for getting started with API? I wonder if they ever sell a 1U with single space API for $400 ~ $450? ![]() Or if im not quite "Pro" cash should I get a tube pre amp for $300? I forget the ones you all suggested but called gold something. I want to be able to get my vocals more upfront and guitars also staged in front as they suffer at times and need to much plug in processing. It slows my work flow down.

| API 6 slot lunchbox - eBay (item 130238253710 end time Jul-12-08 11:11:44 PDT) I could get started with that, then tack on $450 for a single pre? EDIT: I should have said it could be any rack mounted, API or Other. I see this is getting out of my budget fast. I guess ill look for something elce. I think ill go back to this thread and skip API for a few years. Cheapest Tube pre amp that works?

| There was a guy here who sold an API clone kit based on the 2520 opamp design. All you need to do is case it and pair it with a +-18volt power transformer. I remember his pricing was in your price range. |

| Well help me one more. I have a digital desk mixer, 18 input the pre amps work OK but no tone and the guitars and vox need lots of plug ins. So can a small band doing their own recordings use a single API and get the job done? Can it be the "Secrete weapon" for vocals?

Probably your best bet, maybe find a used one for about $800? They are built really solid. Less than that I don't think there are any good options.

You could use a single API, but only if you mic the drum kit with one mic (which has been done by the way). To answer the question better, yes, you certainly can use only API pres and get a great sound and come up with a great recording. API pres in general just have a certain sound that is characteristic of many familiar recordings. If pushed hard and padded on the output, they take on a special character. If they are used "kindly" without pushing them, they will also do you well, but will have less of their own API sound, much like many other decent pres actually. Don't get hung up on API. I have 8 of them, but I do drums exclusively (mostly), and I like what they do to the drums.

Tomer: I have ME 1NV and like it, but at the moment I'm running my Telefunken AK-47 through an HCL Affinity2 tube mic pre which I like a bit better....having said that, do you think I would like the Brent Averil 312A (API) and/or that it would offer me a whole different color?
