Grace m101

Hi guys,

I'm looking for an improvement in recording over my Fireface 400 mic pre's. The Grace m101 seems like a good one to start with.

Do you think it has enough gain to be used with a Shure SM7B? The FF400 pres get noisy when the gain is pushed up to 50-60db.

The Grace m101 has the same range (65db) but i'm hoping it won't be as noisy & cleaner than the FF400 pres.

Can anyone recommend this or any other single channel preamp in the $500-$800 range?

Thanks.

I have had very good experiences with my Grace 101's, they are very clean and low noise. Also check out the Speck Electronics Mic Pre 5. You might also consider an API 512c in a two slot rack, that would give you another kind of sound and would be expandable in the future.

I'm gonna push the summit 2ba-221. Lots of possibilities with this one. V flexible unit.

when I had the grace in for testing, the first thing that came to my mind when I first heard it was: hum, this should work nice with a sm7b.

Specially because I didnt like it that much with more sensitive and bright mics. Its a bit hard sounding, for me, in my enviroment. Its not noisy though.

Not sure for what you would be using it the most but in the 500 to 800 range I would go for the sytek. I still like it, one of my first preamps, 4 channels at an amazing price, it sounds very good on acoustic stuff. Not that hot on vocals and electric guitars, in my opinion.

You could have one channel great river. take a look at the new golden age project preamp also.

Good luck

I'd say go for the Speck and Summit for a little more money.
