| stand to mic bass drum I have a 602e II for a bass drum mic. I also have a short Atlas mic stand and a boom stand. which would be better to position the mic inside the kick? any particular thoughts, or the proverbial "try 'em all & see what works"? ![]()

| Inside the kick, Out side the kick, Near the beater All will produce very different sounds, Expiriment and see what fits you and the song. |

| Without a doubt, SM7. Seriously though, "try 'em all & see what works" is probably the best advice you're going to get. I use a shorty most of the time, but have used both in the past. C |

| This is what I love about these forums: People quickly skim the original post and then start spitting out answers that have nothing to do with the question at hand. The guy asked which stand to use to get the mic inside the kick. One guy starts spitting out other positions to set up the mic. The next guy tells him what mic to use. Neither one answered the question. Here's what I have to say: Use whatever stand makes it easiest to get the mic where you want it. I'm assuming the short stand doesn't have a boom, or else this question may never have been asked. If you can't get the mic where you want it with either of these stands, take the boom off of the taller stand and put it on the short one. Depending on how deep your going inside the kick, you may have to put something heavy on the base of the stand to keep it from tipping. It really is that simple. When it comes to stands, there really is no wrong or right way, just so long as you end up getting the mic where you want it and keep it there. |

| yep, a tiny boom stand with a weight on it. I have not found a suitable boom stand on the cheap that'll extend far enough into the kick without tipping over. (said kick having a resonant head with a hole) Totally low-brow, I filled a plastic jug with water and threaded the vertical post thru the handle. I'm keeping an eye out for a couple of weight-set weights from a workout set to do the same because it'll certainly look better. |

| I did it with a foot from a bass drum mic stand and the top of a boom desktop stand ... or vice versa. Mine extends inside the kick and will hold up a beta 52 with no problem. |

| Lives for gear | someone just showed me this: use a regular boom stand, and then attatch a second boom to the first, that way you have control over the height for the port position and contol of how far into the drum you want to go. works great when you don't have a lot of shorter stands.

| what you want is one of these: it's a clamp that holds a boom arm at right angles to the stand, at any height, six inches or six feet off the ground. other possibilities are the Rock Bag, which is a drum pillow with a mic mount coming out of it, and the Kelly Shu, a horseshoe shaped device that is like a shock mount whose elastic anchors to the inside of the kick drum.
