M-Audio Studiophile BX5 vs Yamaha HS50

I have a pair of BX5s and my friend has a pair of HS50s. We are working on a project together and I would like to know what the main differences are between these monitors, since we seem to disagree on some levels and stuff. Are they in the same league. Do they have different problems? etc.

The BX5s are the original model, I think. They're not BX5As and not the deluxe version.

The primary reason I post this now is that I recently added the bass track to a collaboration we're doing. I thought some of the higher tones kind of disappeared in the mix, especially when monitoring without my SBX subwoofer, while my friend didn't really notice it on his HS50s.

The db levels of the bass tones were about the same, so I'm just trying to figure out if the BX5s have a "weakened" response for some bass freqs, if the HS50s are unbalanced the other way around, or if all this is because of my untreated room.

I don't know about these specific speakers, but I can tell you for sure that my BX8a's have a pretty weird response. The highs are aggressive and kind of harsh, the lows seem to disappear. All I know is that all my mixes translate badly. Maybe I just suck at mixing? I'll know for sure whether it's me or the monitors after I spend some time with the Adam A7s I'll be getting soon.

Cool. Let me know. Have you treated your mixing room in any way?

Not much. I actually just got some Ready Acoustics Ready Bags in the mail yesterday. I'll be making a ton of 6" bass traps and scattering them around the room. Right now I only have one, placed on the wall behind my monitors. It takes care of a dip at 100 Hz (I've measured using Room EQ Wizard) and my response aside from that is not too bad. Not great either, but not bad.
