Thread Starter | side chain? hi- excuse my ignorance but could someone tell me what a side chain is and how its used, like on a compressor? where does it occur in the signal path, etc. i'm a bit confused. thanks, kurt |

| I believe that the sidechain is an input on a compressor that is used to trigger it. Meaning, when there is a signal being input through the sidechain input, that is when the compressor is activated.

| ...or, you could use the kick to trigger a gate on the bass (add 6-18 dB for a moment). That way it sounds like the drummer and bassist are tight.... Usually, you will see sidechains used for de-essing (with a filtered signal triggering a compressor) or for ducking (where an voice-over triggers a comp on background music). -tINY |
