Thread Starter | 003 Preamp/General Preamp Questions I recently purchased an SM7b and have been recording vocal tracks through on-board 003r preamps. Since the SM7b requires so much gain, I often find myself cranking the pot right around 9.3/10 to get a hot enough signal. I have 3 questions for this scenario: Can this endanger the preamp at all? Should a "medium-hot" signal with the fader bumped up for playback capture enough of the sonic nuances to produce an excellent sounding recording? Or, alternatively, what constitutes a "hot enough" signal by conventional means? How will the gain stages towards the end of the pramp's range change or color the sound compared to a lower setting (say, 7-8/10)? This question is more a theoretical question applicable to any preamp towards the end of its dynamic range. I'm looking for an answer to this specific scenario and not suggestions to beef up my signal chain, as my budget is pretty tight at the moment. Thanks for the help, everyone. |

| In a 24-bit recording system, if the level is up to around half of the meter in your DAW it should be ample to get a perfectly detailed recording. In fact, I have been encouraged to keep it there because the super-fast transients can cause funny psycho-acoustic noise in digital systems if recording signals are too hot. |

| Go ahead and crank the preamp unless you are overdriving it (you'd need something deathly loud going into the Sm7). Get whatever level you can, you don't need to peak near 0dbFS to still get something usable, as said. You can't hurt anything regardless (unless you are trying to I guess). Sorry to see you fall victim to the SM7 hysteria...it's about the tenth mic that should go into a locker, but the online forums have made people think it should be the first. It needs a much better preamp than that, but you can make that work. |

Thread Starter | Thanks for the replies. I purchased the SM7 for use on both loud, raspy punk rock vocals as well as the kick drum. It may have been encouraged by online informants, but I don't necessarily think it's at all hyped. Also, I often record in situations where it is nearly impossible to eliminate all outside noises, and it does a great job isolating the source. In the end, you have to start somewhere/try new items yourself, right? |
