Waves vs. TC M-One

I currently have some slightly older Waves plugins, and will be mixing an upcoming album out of the box, using a mixer and Cubase together. Would getting the M.One, or somethign else (maybe used) in this price range improve on the sound of Waves Reverbs?
I think it would make life simpler to have outboard reverbs, but with my budget, I don't know if it's worth it.

Thanks,

Stephen

I always mix out of the box and if you can get your hands on an m one XL, go for it. It is the best sounding efx box in that price range. I beleive that the M-one sounds just as good as its bigger more expensive brothers, the 1000, 2000, and 3000. I can't notice any audible difference. I also recommend the roland SRV-3030. It has good verbs and great percussion small rooms.
You won't be sorry.

I'd rather have this, than get like an UAD-1, or something, which is vaguely the same price. I'm going to have a few DBX 903's and Aphex Compellor's/Expressor's, so really what I'm worried about is reverb. I NEED the best sounding option, if I have to pay for it. But if I'm going to buy something, I think I'd rather get an outboard unit, because it will be more useful live.
But with a plug-in I can have multiple instances...
So torn.
Looking for more input, if I can get it. :-)

I use an M-One as outboard for my 002R, as i have a slow G4-933 iBook and mixing 16 tracks is a big job for it - outboards let me do more than just ITB. I got the M-One just before the XL came out, and got stuck with it. I like it, though, and use it for overall halls more than for vocals or drums. It brings the mix together nicely. I use it with digital I/O and it works well.

Secret technique - with my slow system (which I have upgrade plans for, rest assured!) I use an Alesis Wedge for vocal verbs - it has some very nice presets and is easily customizable, and sounds damn good for a $99 reverb. I have a second one I use for live PA too. A real sleeper of a unit.

Of course better is better, but it is more expensive, too. I like having something that works, at a price point that lets me work for humans and musicians, not industrial corporations.

PS - I have Waves v.5.0, and the Rverb is fine, but to use it I have to bounce it to a track first with my puny li'l 933...

BTW, you might try some real subtle stufff with TrueVerb - if you cancel the early reflections and tweak it right it can sound surprisingly nice for certain things! (I learned about it from Bob O a few years ago...)

Thanks! Sounds like the consensus is just to do with what I have, and save my money/spend it elsewhere.

Thanks for your advice,

Stephen

For reverb, I have the Waves 5.0 stuff, Altiverb and for outboard a TC Electronics M2000. I prefer the M2000 over the Waves verbs (I'm not comparing Waves IR though). I tend to like Altiverb alot, moreso than the M2000 for the most part. Altiverb is not that tweakable (which may be a good thing), whereas the verbs on the M2000 have numerous parameters (perhaps too many). I'm not using the M2000 converters, as I come out of the box via S/PDIF and back in via S/PDIF. The converters are decent in the M2000 - mid grade level I suppose.

For not a ton more money a Kursweil Rumow will, in my opinion blow the MoneXL out of the water. I have owned both, and the Mone XL was cool , but its been gone for a while, and the Rumor holds up to the pcm91's and TC M5000's I have either owned or used. Not to mention, the Kursweil's user interface is probably the best, and easiest I have ever used. It is simple and very intuitive to use. It is definately worth checking out.

Cool, as I was just wondering if anyone's tried these Kurzweil units (Rumor and Mangler). They seem like a great value at $499! I've never had a good outboard fx box, so it's hard to decide between Lexicon, TC, and now Kurzweil...

Good to know about the Rumor, I may give it a shot, tired of running out of CPU power!

I'd pick up a cheap computer with a multi-input spound card and run several instances of the WAVES IR-1.

For some idiotic reason they have it default to the most cpu demanding settings but with a little tweaking you can get five or six absolutely tremendous sounding reverb units even "in the box."

But a separate CPU and soundcard just to run reverb is not technically "in the box" anymore! That's just another outboard reverb! :-)

As far as a rack unit that is useful for gigging, I would also highly recommend the Kurzweil Rumour over any of the other low cost units mentioned. It's a great sounding box, and has a far wider variety of reverb sounds than the TC units.
