Several times - Not in quite a while, though... They were nice... Nothing amazing, but certainly capable...

Two... consoles? For $250?

Do they work?

I have worked a lot with it. Agree with MASSIVE Master. Think it can be described as quite clean sounding.

Two for $250 ???????? That's insane

I was watching a band at a gig one night and saw a rather drunk female spill an entire jug of beer onto a TAC Scorpion. The desk stopped, the band stopped, the gig stopped.
Don't know if the desks are any good but I thought I'd share that useless information with you.

Still waiting for them to arrive. In a studio mixing an album now and they are using a TAC matchless console. It's huge. I'm hoping that the the scorpions are are lot smaller.

Oh... um . Judging from the photos they each have 12 mono channels two stereo channels, 8 bus channels and 4 auxs. Should compliment my 002r setup nicely.

Awsome Unit once Upgraded...

The Scorpion makes/takes it's line level through the mic preamps. This means that you're at mic level and get reduce to get at line level. This adds noise and makes things muddy. We are currrently converting our entire console to line level only. Getting rid of the mic amps and using outboard mic pre's. It now sounds AWESOME!

Get the upgrade is you have the bux...

Since you got em' cheep, see if you can do a few channels to see what it'll sound like. Do the 4001 Master, and a pair each of 1101 Channel and 3101 Buss modules. Make sure you get an Operator/SERVICE MANUAL to see what's going on with your unit. All the best! Donnie D.

when I first opened my studio I had a 24x16 tac scorpion. For the money there great! the pre and eq is useable, way better than a mackie 8 bus. When you mix on it make sure to keep an eye on the 2 mix, as soon as you start to drive it too much your mix will just go to hell.

Good luck,

Reed

The TAC Scorpion II is a great board. It's Preamp and EQ section were designed by Rupert Neve and built to be the Neve "Live" board!

The biggest drawback is that they are heavy as HELL! The damned thing is built like a tank with double wall 1/8" steel construction!!!

I use one in my studio and these are the pre-amps I use for my drums. I've got 3 channels out now and looking for a bigger chassis (the 40x8 frame) and a bunch of extra channel strips.

If anyone knows of one please let me know...

Main thing that I noticed about the board was that it didn't sound "fast", had a bit more noise than I was used to, and worst of all that a good many of the pots were REALLY dirty, crackly and poppy on the EQs. That's fixable of course, but just a pain in the ass. Overall i enjoyed the EQ on that board quite a bit however.

My first console was a 24 Channel Scorpion that came from Mitch Easters Drive In Studio (REM's first engineer/producer). The board sounded fine and was quite durable, but the pots are horrible and the pres were so-so. If you don't use the pots, they get scratchy and get dead spots in them fast. Use em or lose em is my best advice... I think they are sealed graphite pots.. which is part of the problem. Cool console though..... have fun.

Those were the days!

I loved my Scorpion. As said before they were built like tanks. Incredibly heavy! Breaks the back of two people carrying it.

I just loved the built quality and the leather armrest. The EQ's weren't too bad.

I did an EP on a Scorpion years back and it was fine. As someone else said it was clean sounding which is not such a bad thing.
