...and that didn't answer my question at all i got the 1640 with the FW card for $1400, new...you stated that comparable products(16 channels of preamps, converters, talkback, monitor routing, aux sends, EQ's, etc.) can be found for $1000 less - which would be around $400 i'm going to bet it's not possible, and that you're just going out of your way to bash on mackie shit |

it did answer you question to the point i had worded my earlier post incorrectly, for about 1K (give or take, and used even less probably) you can get 16 channels. and no i am not going out of my way to bash on "mackie shit". you could do 2 of any of these: presonus fp10 firestudio project firestudio profire 2626 motu 8pre art tubefire 8 saffire pro 10 saffire pro 26 a couple of those you're gonna have to haggle a bit (GC Pro doesn't seem to mind haggling) to get 2 of them for around 1K. and for clarification, the EQ's and inserts are not available when you use the FW card unless you get the mod done at FEA.

i might be wrong here, but i was pretty sure you said that you can get a comparable product for $1000 less than the mackie...and FWIW, i personally prefer my onyx to everything you mentioned. it's also worth noting that if you really want to, you can easily route the EQs and inserts of one channel into the converters of another channel - assuming you have one open. in addition, there's also been posts on a few forums showing how to perform the firewire mod without having to send the board to FEA. i would have modded mine myself, but i have several EQ plugs that sound better to me than the onyx EQ, so i don't really care. i actually like the fact that after i get down the sounds that i'm tracking, i can EQ the source on the board and not affect the recorded tracks. but hey, whatever...to each his own i guess. |

Too bad Bitfiend doesn't know how to set up his own computer. I own a Mackie Onyx 1640 w/Firewire and it's awesome. I've used on at least six different computers, from desktops to laptops from XP to Vista, all different parts. A have three friends with 1640's and they love them too. Installing everything was only too easy and I've never had an issue ever. The Pre's are killer. Now, I'm in the same boat as you it seems and I'm actually getting rid of the Onyx 1640 and getting the 1200F, 12 inputs, 192khz/24 bit (not that I care about the 192). I don't use my Onyx live and although it would be awesome to mod it and get a nice analog eq sound, I'm just not going to bother with that. Long story short, I love the 1640 and I've been very happy recording everything from acoustic guitar to a full band with no issues ever! |

the drivers on my 1200f are rock solid 100% of the time and someone i know has the ff-800 and he's the first to admit that the pre's are better on my onyx 1200. both units are good but the 1200 is better value for the money. and as far as the 1640,why would anyone track multiple tracks with e.q. you don't know how it will all sit together in the end. they might sound good comming in as singles but how's it gonna sound when you have 12 or 15 going and now your stuck with it unless you add yet more noise by re-equing. or am i missing something here. i guess it would be nice to have a switch to be able to record the e.q. or not but why would this be important.
